We know that there is a Thunderbolts movie in the works, and that has led to some discussions about a possible game tie-in and crossover with Marvel’s Spider-Man. Even though Insomniac Games is currently working on the Wolverine game, some people have speculated about whether this could be a game we could see at some point in the future.
One thing is for certain: Marvel fans love to talk about what they want from game developers and filmmakers, and this is clear from the recent postings on the subreddit dedicated to everyone’s favorite wall-crawling superhero. Some of the suggestions in the posting should be taken with a pinch of salt but are perhaps not without merit.
Could We See a Thunderbolts Game to Tie in with the Movie?
As noted on the subreddit, the posting from u/snitchpogi12 talks about how disappointed they were with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and that a certain game developer should be looking at making a game featuring the Thunderbolts in which they destroy the Avengers.
Some fans dismissed this out of hand, saying that this wouldn’t be something that they could see happening and that they would prefer to see a game in which Deadpool kills the Marvel Universe. This has been covered in a graphic novel, so why not in a game?
Some people may remember the 2013 Deadpool game from High Moon Studios, which had some hilarious moments but ultimately failed in terms of repetitiveness. Given that Deadpool 3 is currently being filmed, there is always the possibility that we could see a revamped game for current-gen consoles.
Who Are the Thunderbolts?
Several people on the subreddit questioned who the team actually is and perhaps were not aware of the upcoming Marvel movie or the comic book history. The team of Anti-heroes could be compared to DC’s Suicide Squad and that comparison was made on the thread.
Originally formed by Baron Zemo in the comic books, the current roster for the upcoming movie sees White Widow (Yelena Belkova), Winter Soldier (Bucky Barnes), Red Guardian (Alexei Shostakov) and US Agent (John Walker) amongst others.
A motley crew of misfits with varying sets of powers could easily be incorporated into a game. However, with Wolverine currently in development and the Marvel movie due out in 2025, it is perhaps too much of a stretch to think that we would see a game at the same time. But that’s not to say we couldn’t see it at some point in the future if the movie is a success.
It’s an exciting time for Spider-Man fans given the confirmation from the developers about NG+ and other features coming soon. With the work being done by Marvel on the Thunderbolts movie, it would make sense to see an accompanying game and the pedigree that Insomniac have, who better to take this project on?
