The character of Wolverine has perhaps one of the most complex backstories in the Marvel Universe, so it will be interesting to see how this is addressed in the upcoming Insomniac game. However, it appears the developer has some experience in the writing department with their newly promoted Narrative Director.

How much of a backstory can we expect on James Howlett, aka Logan, aka Wolverine?

For those who have experienced the Marvel’s Spider-Man games from Insomniac, there is an amazing level of storytelling which is paramount to the games’ success. This is emphasised with the company’s most recent offering Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 which is understandably a game of the year contender, in no small part to the exciting storyline.

Fans may or may not be surprised to note that the story writer for the latest Insomniac game is someone who is no stranger to the industry. As of last year, Walt Williams was confirmed to be the Story Writer for the latest Marvel’s Spider-Man game and many players will remember Williams’ most famous work as the 2012 game Spec Ops: The Line.

Williams has recently updated his bio on social media site X (formerly Twitter) to reflect his promotion within the company and this is no doubt a reward for work well done on the previous Insomniac game. Previous to this, Williams had his bio set to that of being Story Lead for the upcoming game but with this change, what does that mean for the game?

In essence, this means that Williams will now have full creative control of the Wolverine game, which given his experience can only be a positive aspect for the game moving forward. His distinctly grounded variety of storytelling could be just what Insomniac needs for the complexity of the Wolverine character and the various aspects of his life.

Now that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has been released Insomniac Games can turn their full attention to the Wolverine game and at the time of writing, unfortunately, there is very little to go on as details of the Marvel game have been kept well and truly under wraps. Despite this, fans have understandably been speculating about what they can expect from the upcoming title.

Spec Ops
Spec Ops: The Line was highly praised for its gripping storyline and eye-opening look at morality in war.

Given the extensive publication of the character through various comic book titles, there is a plethora of source material available that could serve as the storyline for the game. Fans will no doubt expect a reference to the Weapon-X program, whether it be through flashbacks or in an actual mission setting but could we see the game go even further back to the origins of James Howlett?

The possibilities for this title are endless and dedicated fans will hope that Williams doesn’t try to cram too much into the first appearance. There is certainly an unlimited amount of scope for various side missions, DLC, and indeed a sequel or two. Which in turn, may see other Marvel characters introduced in a playable sense. We’re sure that many comic book fans would love to see characters from the X-Men being introduced.

It is clear that following the success of previous Marvel titles for Insomniac, the expectation for the upcoming game is that it must perform at the same pinnacle. With Wolverine being undoubtedly one of the most popular characters in the Marvel Universe and one of the most violent, many fans just hope that the game will do the character justice.
