It cannot be denied that Amazon’s plans to release the second season in halves have affected the hype of the Steven Yeun show. However, the fifth episode “This Must Come As A Shock” stood true to its title and shocked the audience by giving a fateful and different ending to two prime characters in the series- Dupli-Kate and Shrinking Rae.

The latest episode featured the Guardians of the Globe dealing with two threats at the same time. While Mark Grayson aka the titular superhero along with Atom Eve, The Immortal, Bulletproof, Black Samson, Monster Girl, Robot, and Shapesmith travel outer space to get rid of the Sequids, Rex Splode, Shrinking Rae, and the Dupli-Kate stays back on Earth.

Rex’s pizza plan gets interrupted as trouble ensues when the Lizard League attacks the Global Defense Agency’s Headquarters inside the Pentagon and he, Kate, and Rae are called to service. The battle against the team, inspired by Marvel’s Serpent Society and DC’s Kobra Cult seemed easy when they killed Salamander and Iguana. But it got out of hand when Dupli-Kate was crushed with her clone by the Komodo Dragon.

Besides Kate, Shrinking Rae also attempts to use her Ant-Man-like powers to grow inside the Komodo Dragon’s mouth and explode his head. But she also faces a fateful end after being eaten alive. Although Rae’s death was anticipated, Kate’s death was a shocker to fans. Kate even died in the comic book once but later in a plot twist, it was revealed that the one to die was not the superheroine but her clone.

Interestingly, it does not seem the Robert Kirkman series will opt for a similar route. There is much left in the series to unfold but Kirkman’s promise about not being predictable to fans of the comic books may hint that Dupli-Kate’s journey has concluded in the series.

What did Robert Kirkman say about Dupli-Kate’s death?

During an interview with Variety, when Robert Kirkman was asked about his decision to kill Dupli-Kate along with Rae, the co-creator shared that he loves to create shockers for audiences. He wants the audience to know that anything can happen during an episode of Invincible.

“Losing these characters in the way that we’re losing them is a good way to give the audience that sense that when you sit down to watch an episode of ‘Invincible’ you don’t know what’s going to happen; you can never anticipate where we’re going to go on this show. Or know what’s going to happen to these characters.”

Later in the interview, The Walking Dead creator emphasized that they never want to get too predictable even for the hardcore fans of the comics. He warned anybody who thinks that they know enough about the animated show by reading the source material. He stated that the fans will “notice a huge difference in the way that we tell the same story”. In this way, they are successful in capturing both the comic book fans and the general audience.

Robert Kirkman’s comments hint that Dupli-Kate may not have a similar treatment as the source material. As he does not want to make it predictable even for the comic book lovers, the surprise of her return may never play out in the series. It will be interesting to see how many more surprises are waiting for us in Invincible‘s future.

Invincible Season 2 Part 2 can be streamed on Prime Video with a new episode dropping every Thursday.
