There is no main city in Genshin Impact’s Teyvat that has rain. Whether it is the city of Mondstadt, Inazuma, Liyue, or Sumeru, rain is never seen in places where the Adventurer’s Guild lies. None except Fontaine that is. Although Travelers will never encounter rain in the Court of Fontaine outside of a story or an archon quest, it is still there and for reasons that attach to someone rather important to the nation.
As per the archon quest in Version 4.0, it is the Hydro Dragon’s weeping that makes it rain in the city. Although initially it is passed on to be an old folktale, there is much more to it as the story progresses. However, is it just the Hydro Dragon’s tears or something more than that?

Genshin Impact’s Neuvillette’s Raining Tears
Freminet talks about how the rain in Fontaine is not just the water cycle but much more than that. As per old stories, it is the Hydro Dragon who cries that makes it rain in the nation of Hydro. The phrase, “Hydro Dragon, Hydro Dragon don’t cry!” is often sung by children in hopes of making the rain stop. After the 4.1 Archon quests, it is confirmed that the unexpected rain is the result of the Hydro Dragon crying. Not only that, but the entity itself it revealed to be Neuvillette.
The cutscene for his story quest shows a sorrowful Neuvillette walking across the streets of Fontaine as he watches the people complain about the rain. The quest in itself is heartwarming and shows just how much the character cares about the Melusines and the aquatic life forms. However, the final cutscene is one that is as painful as knowing just how much the Hydro Dragon endures. It shows him observing everyone as his own pain troubles those around him. Although there is a key detail many could have missed out on.
How Did Neuvillette Know?
The cutscene doesn’t just show him crying through the rain, but it also shows him observing the people who talk about him. It shows how much the people of Fontaine, whether human or not rely on him. How they see him and how they think about him. It shows Navia and it shows the Fatui siblings with Arlecchino. However, these are all simple details that fans would simply observe. Considering it is Neuvillette’s story quest, it is only natural for him to be the focus of it all.
What may be missed easily is that he was observing instances where he was never physically present. Proof of that is Arlecchino’s conversation with Lyney and Lynette. The rain may not just be a way for him to release emotions but also keep an eye on the people of Fontaine. The rain could be more than just his tears, being his eyes and his ears to protect the nation he loves so dearly.
