Nicole Kidman made history by being the first Australian to win an Academy Award for Best Actress for her haunting portrayal of the gifted yet troubled writer Virginia Woolf in The Hours when she was only 35 years old. And yet, the A-lister is mostly remembered by her association with Tom Cruise and hardly by the incredibly versatile career that has continually dropped blockbusters with her at the helm. The four-time Oscar-nominated actress has failed to etch a magnitude of dignity that would have otherwise been accorded to her male counterparts and Kidman made sure that her feelings were heard.

Nicole Kidman’s Career Called Into Question By Interviewer

Nicole Kidman’s very public and very famous marriage to Mission Impossible star, Tom Cruise, was an object of fascination and envy for most in Hollywood. The pair dominated the entirety of the 90s in the limelight while they rose as the most captivating, enigmatic, extravagant, and on-the-rise power couple in the industry well until Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston became the obsession during the late ’90s.

Be as it may, Kidman’s high-profile marriage to the Hollywood icon at the time was viewed through the lens of make-believe. A tall, ethereally beautiful, porcelain-skinned young 23-year-old with a wild mane of flaming red hair who sweeps in like a hurricane, stealing the world’s most wanted man’s breath at first sight, and mesmerizing the biggest name-brand directors simply by walking into the room, all while carving out a niche for herself in one of the most competitive industries in the planet – it all simply sounded like a Hollywood rom-com bound for a Thanksgiving weekend premiere. But that, in a nutshell, was Nicole Kidman.

And yet, all of her achievements are reduced to subpar side hustle in the face of her love life when all an interviewer can do is reduce her Oscar-winning actress’s career to a reflection of her failed marriage to Tom Cruise.

Nicole Kidman Speaks Out Against Sexist Question

In an interview with The Guardian, Nicole Kidman, who had just finished filming for the 2021 movie, Being the Ricardos, which would go on to win her another Oscar nomination in 2022 spoke about her character during the film’s promotional tour. Kidman claimed:

“Sometimes you’re going to fall in love with someone who isn’t going to be the person you spend the rest of your life with. That’s all very relatable. You may have kids with them. You may not, but they were very much in love.”

The synopsis that Kidman presented for her character Lucille Ball instantly drew the attention of the interviewer who pointed out if the actress was indirectly referring to her whirlwind romance and decade-long marriage to Tom Cruise to which Kidman, rightly angry, responded:

“Oh, my God, no, no. Absolutely not. No. I mean, that’s, honestly, so long ago that it isn’t in this equation. So, no. I would ask not to be pigeonholed that way, either. It feels to me almost sexist, because I’m not sure anyone would say that to a man. And at some point, you go, ‘Give me my life. In its own right’.”

Most recently, Nicole Kidman’s appearance at the 2023 Oscars raised a few eyebrows after her “weird” antics on the champagne carpet. The actress is currently slated to make her appearance next in one of the most highly-anticipated movies of 2023, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the DC film that will supposedly close out the arc for the last of the remaining heroes from the SnyderVerse era.

Being the Ricardos is currently available for streaming on Prime Video.
