George Miller’s Mad Max franchise has been around for ages in the form of films, games, and comics. A part of popular culture already, its popularity further exploded when Mad Max: A Fury Road was released in 2015, three decades after the last film. Starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron in the lead, it is one of the best-ranked movies of the entire saga.

Taking the tale even further (or rather backward), the next Mad Max movie will be a prequel exploring the origins of Furiosa. And Geroge Miller recently revealed that he has a prequel planned that would bring back Hardy.

Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy are all set to lead the next Mad Max movie, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, that goes even further into the post-apocalyptic world, to reveal the origins of Furiosa. Played by Charlize Theron in the critically acclaimed Mad: Max: The Fury Road, Furiosa is a fan-favorite character, making the movie a highly anticipated entry.

Despite the addition of actors like Hemsworth and Taylor-Joy, fans of the franchise still want Tom Hardy to return as Max. And in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, George Miller confirmed that Furiosa will feature a blind-and-miss cameo of Max and his car, the Interceptor.

What’s more, is that Miller already has a story written down, set a year before Fury Road, that he expects to make some time in the future.

“In doing what we did in the preparation of Mad Max: Fury Road, we also wrote what happened to Max in the year before we encounter him in [that film]. And as we get towards the end of this movie, the chronology… Basically, we had to see that Mad Max was lurking around somewhere because we do know what happened. The writers know what happened to Mad Max in that year before, and we have a whole story of that, which I would like to do sometime if I get the chance.”

This is an exciting update, as such a movie will bring Hardy’s Max back to the saga. And fans can hardly wait to witness Hardy’s outstanding performance once again.

Before the release of Fury Road, Tom Hardy had signed on for three Mad Max movies. Hence, Hardy coming back as Max is not a question of if, but rather when (via GQ). After George Miller’s recent revelation, although ambiguous and shrouded in uncertainty, Hardy might very well make his way back to the dystopian wreckage of a world.

And after Miller’s comments went viral, this is how fans reacted:

Tom Hardy’s performance in The Fury Road was incredible and the movie went on to earn several Academy Award nominations, winning six of them. Yet, having another Mad Max movie will largely depend upon Furiosa’s box office performance and reception. Furthermore, with Miller already 79, him directing another of these post-apocalyptic features seems unlikely.

Yet, seeing the popularity of the franchise and Hardy being a fan-favorite, the chances of us getting another Hardy-starrer Mad Max movie is definitely not impossible.
