The late iconic legend Matthew Perry has given the cinema and worldwide audiences some of the most cherishable moments, both onscreen as well as offscreen — not just through Friends, but his other big screen masterpieces as well. But despite such excellence, he wasn’t honored at the recently held BAFTAs following his devastating demise.
Yet, while the BAFTAs are gone, another major awards ceremony will soon be reaching the audiences: The Oscar Awards 2024. And this time, the Academy has a chance to not only pay tribute to Perry for all the outstanding projects he has presented the entertainment industry with but also make one of his unfulfilled wishes come true.
The Oscars 2024 can make Matthew Perry’s unfulfilled wish come true
During a recent interview with The Mirror, the renowned Friends alum’s former girlfriend cum assistant, Kayti Edwards shared what was seemingly Perry’s wish that he never got to see fulfilled throughout his lifetime: Getting honored at the Academy Awards for his life struggles, in some way.
As Edwards, 47, revealed days before the upcoming ceremony:
“I know that it would mean a lot for him to be honored at the Oscars in some way. I remember having a conversation with him about how it was always his dream to be recognized and not just for FRIENDS. He was always aware of the sad reality that FRIENDS got tons of awards …but personally, I don’t think he got one.”
What’s worth noting is that this revelation about the 17 Again actor’s unfulfilled wish came after the recently held British Academy Film Awards 2024 initially refused to acknowledge him at the major award ceremony.
Even though the late legend had starred in 15 hit films, he was still snubbed at the BAFTAs 2024. This notably earned the BAFTA bosses a ton of backlash from fans, eventually resulting in them promising to pay tribute to Perry in their future TV awards instead.
Kayti Edwards is “not surprised at all” by fans’ backlash at Matthew Perry’s BAFTA snub
Continuing during the same interview, Kayti Edwards further mentioned how she was “not surprised at all” by the backlash the BAFTA bosses earned following their snubbing of Perry at the 2024 ceremony, inevitably hinting that her late ex-boyfriend cum boss very much deserved it.
“I am not surprised at all by the backlash [to the BAFTA snub] …he was so very well loved,” Edwards said.
At the same time, she also acknowledged the fact that Matthew Perry more or less shared a “love-hate relationship” with his acting career. She said:
“Although it’s interesting as he had a love-hate relationship with his film career. He was always cast in a funny role or as the love interest but instead he always wanted roles that had more depth, and that were more meaningful.”
All in all, while BAFTA made the mistake of snubbing the late fan-favorite actor and earned backlash in return, the Academy still holds a chance to not make the same mistake and ensure smooth sailing among fans with the ceremony.
The 96th Academy Awards aka Oscars Ceremony 2024 will be held on Sunday, the 10th of March, 2024, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. EST. You can stream the program live on Hulu+ with Live TV, YouTube TV, FuboTV, or Sling TV.
