Right after the success of Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One, Adam Wingard’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire revered the essence of the Monsterverse narrative, this time Godzilla and King uniting. While fans were wondering about the reason behind the rose-colored Godzilla spikes in its back, Lead Creature Designer Jared Krichevsky invited fans to ask him anything about the movie’s monsters. “Hi, I’m Jared, Lead Creature Designer on #GodzillaxKongTheNewEmpire Ask Me Almost Anything,” Krichevsky wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

A fan who goes by, Flammy DeVito asked the valid question, “Is rose colored Godzilla his permanent form until further notice?” the user asked on X. Also, the very appearance of Godzilla seems to be inspired by the iconic Dragon Ball character Goku. “And was his max transformation inspired by Rose Goku by any chance?” the user added another question to their query.

Krichevsky revealed the Kaio-Ken influence while explaining the real reason behind the color.

“I didn’t see Goku Rose until years later. But I did base the transformation off of Kaio-Ken. Yeah it was always supposed to be temporary transition. In the movie he absorbs the DNA of Tiamat.”

Makes sense, the bioluminescence of the aquatic and serpentine type Titan that resides in the deep ocean is powerful and has its advantage, primarily the luminescence. Godzilla absorbed the DNA of the creature in the movie, hence, the addition of the rose color.

Of course, Krichevsky’s comment made it clear that the idea behind the rose-colored spikes was not a direct inspiration from Dragon Ball’s Rose Goku but Kaio-Ken’s aura (a technique also known as World King Fist). Following his statement, fans took to X to respond to his attempt to clear the cloud of misconception.

In many ways, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was another astonishing installment to the Monsterverse. It has introduced several outlandish cinematic sequences including the neon landscape but it worked as Wingard had the space (per Roger Ebert) to experiment without much intervention from the studio.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is now showing in theaters.
