Fans are still bummed out Netflix did not renew David Fincher’s Mindhunter series for a third season after Jonathan Groff’s amazing job playing Holden Ford. The gripping story of conversations with serial killers was also the selling point that got viewers hooked on the show.

One of the attributes that made Mindhunter a successful one is the brilliance of Fincher’s creative vision. Everyone who has worked with the director knows they are always in good hands and they entrust the whole project to his judgment.

Jonathan Groff Fought For One Scene To Include In Mindhunter

Jonathan Groff has always admired the works of David Fincher and claimed that it was a total dream to be able to work with the filmmaker. While helming the Netflix series Mindhunter, the actor thought one scene could be improved now that he’s got the hang of his character. He shared via Variety:

They kept figuring out how they were going to evolve this relationship with Hannah Gross, who plays my girlfriend on the show, Debbie. And they hadn’t written the end of it yet.

Groff noted how he’s never seen a breakup where there is no chaotic fight. “It’s just a person sort of intellectualizing behavior and what’s happening in the breakup,” he recalled. He loved that scene, but the writers were constantly revising the script, and the next morning, it was already a different one.

He said that the scene resonated with him, and he fought to have that in the final cut. The actor, however, would never take the credit for it.

The writers and [David Fincher] had already created it anyway, but it was moving in another direction, and it sort of moved back in the direction it was before.

Groff quipped that it was difficult to pick a thing where he can disagree with the director “because his world and his point of view is so specific.” It was a great thing, though, that he fought to have that scene because it spoke so much of his character.

In another interview with Groff via Absolute Music Chat, the Hamilton star shared what it was like working with Fincher and imagining himself having a better vision than what the director has already laid on the table.

This process is the complete opposite of that – absolutely no improvisation – everything is planned within an inch of its life and like you said: when you are in the room with a brain like David Fincher’s, I’m just going to let him take the reins.

Groff is very adept with improvisations due to his experience in theater, but according to the actor, it was something he could not attempt to do when he worked with Fincher.

Every dialogue must be accurate, and every scene must be followed, so it was indeed a miracle that the director agreed to his idea.
