Mindhunter is arguably one of Netflix’s most-talked-about shows. The series was inspired by the 1995 true-crime book of the same name by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker. It was created by Joe Penhall and executive produced by David Fincher. Despite the fanfare surrounding the series, it has not aired a new episode since 2019.

Ever since the show’s second installment dropped on Netflix all the way back in 2019, there is been speculation about a potential third installment. Although McCallany’s update has a hint of optimism about the third season, fans should be cautious. Here is what McCallany said about Mindhunter season 3.

Bill Tench Actor Holt McCallany Gives Update on Mindhunter Season 3 Update

Actor Holt McCallany is gaining recognition for his role as Fritz Von Erich in the 2023 biographical sports drama film The Iron Claw. However, for a section of viewers, he is synonymous with the role of FBI special agent Bill Tench, in Mindhunter. Recently, McCallany sat down for a conversation with Awards Daily to discuss his new film. During the interview, McCallany also touched upon the much-debated subject of Mindhunter season 3.

In the interview, McCallany admitted that the series had ended after two seasons. McCallany stated that he was grateful for the experience of working with David Fincher. While he hopes for the series to have lasted longer than two seasons, that was ultimately not in his control.

“Did I want Mindhunter to be canceled after two seasons? Uh, no, but that’s not my decision. That’s my friend David’s (Fincher) decision. And if that’s David’s decision, that’s David’s decision. I understand, and I accept, and I move on.”

In the same interview, McCallany also revealed that Fincher had thought about possibly making a third season. However, the plans did not come to fruition. Nonetheless, the actor would be on board to reprise his role as Bill Tench should Fincher have a change of heart.

“I’m not saying it’s going to come back. But what I am saying is that if it comes back, I’m coming back with it. You can take that to the bank, but it’ll depend on what David wants to do.”

McCallany clarified that while Mindhunter could return for a third season, it seems unlikely since so much time has passed after the second season was released. However, McCallany felt that David Fincher having thought about a potential third installment left the door open for the show’s return despite its apparent cancellation by Netflix.

In 2019, development for a third season was put on indefinite hold until David Fincher finished work on his film Mank. However, a year later the cast was released from their contracts putting the show’s fate in limbo. After years of speculation, Fincher himself confirmed the series had been canceled in February 2023. The show’s budget was cited as one of the primary reasons for its cancellation as it had failed to garner an audience size that would justify its cost to the streaming service.

Mindhunter season 1 and season 2 are available to stream on Netflix across the globe.
