We always thought the two actors were the best of friends (off-screen), just like Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet were when Titanic was released. How wrong we were!

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet was adapted by Baz Luhrmann and starred DiCaprio and Danes in the 1996 feature. Although the movie was a financial success and critics praised the on-screen chemistry between the two actors, their interactions ‘off the set’ were very different. Why?

The Enchanting On-Screen Chemistry Between Leonardo DiCaprio And Claire Danes

Their iconic portrayals of star-crossed lovers have raised the bar for romantic leads in contemporary film. Audiences find it simple to root for them despite the tragic ending, thanks to their youthful energy, passion, and vulnerability. Thus, they continue to receive praise for their performances, even today; being proof of their undeniable talent and chemistry.

However, their interactions on the set of Baz Luhrmann’s, Romeo + Juliet, according to Miriam Margolyes (Juliet’s nurse), 82, was “painful to watch”.

“We filmed in Mexico City, paradise for someone like me who fossicking around through flea markets and antiques shops, and, like me, Leonardo was into bling in a big way, too.”

Danes, who was then 17 years old, was allegedly “infatuated” with the Titanic actor at the time, according to Margolyes.

The 82-year-old British-Australian actress further claimed that The Revenant actor was “dismissive” of the 44-year-old actress and did not reciprocate her feelings. She said, “It was painful to watch.”

The ‘Uncool’ Attitude Of Leonardo DiCaprio

It is well known that Leonardo DiCaprio was a heartthrob in the 1990s, but less well known is his behavior while filming Romeo + Juliet with co-star, Claire Danes.

Even, Danes admitted in an interview that she adored DiCaprio and thought he was incredible. However, the 48-year-old actor never accepted her feelings, and instead, avoided her outside of filming.

At the time, DiCaprio’s dismissive behavior toward Danes might have come across as icy or even unprofessional. But looking back, she could have done better to maintain her distance and not try to engage with him romantically.

Their successful on-screen chemistry was also a result of their ability to project their strong feelings without letting their real-life relationships interfere with their performance.

It can’t be refuted that many people fell in love with Leonardo DiCaprio because of his charm, attractiveness, and undeniable talent after seeing him in Romeo + Juliet. However, it appears that his co-star, Claire Danes felt the same level of admiration from him, if not more.

It is a common behavior among actors who strive for authenticity in their work. Thus, it’s possible that the Inception actor’s actions were a reflection of his dedication to giving a truly memorable performance as ‘Romeo’.
