The success of The Twilight Saga was a double edge sword for Robert Pattinson, as on one hand, it skyrocketed the actor into stardom, but it also prevented Big studios from hiring him. This led to the actor finding his footing in the Indie landscape, where he starred in several critically acclaimed projects, eventually making his way to the top through projects, including Tenet and The Batman.
Even though his performance in the Twilight movies failed to impress bigger studios and critics, it did make him an overnight star. However, being recognized for the Twilight movies almost garnered some severe issues during his time on the indie landscape.
Going undercover in a prison almost backfired on Robert Pattinson
After departing from the Hollywood spotlight, Robert Pattinson found himself starring in a niche of films distributed by smaller productions in order to rebuild his resume as an actor. This involved projects like Cosmopolis, the Oscar-nominated The Lighthouse, and Good Time, which eventually garnered the eye of industry biggies, resulting in him leading films like Tenet and The Batman.
However, while working on Good Time, which many consider his best performance to date, Pattinson took extreme measures to perfect his character, including visiting real prisons in secrecy. But considering the actor was a pretty familiar face, thanks to the Twilight movies, during his time in an elevator full of inmates, one of them recognized him, resulting in the actor getting terrified. Pattinson recalled,
“We’d been there for five or six hours and no one had any idea who I was, but as we were leaving via this elevator full of inmates, I could feel this guy staring at me. I went, ‘What?’ and he just looks at me and goes, ‘F*****’ Twilight.’ Suddenly everyone in this elevator is staring at me. I’m literally going: ‘I don’t know what he’s talking about.’ It was terrifying.”
Although getting recognized for his Twilight movies isn’t that surprising, and going method for his time on Good Time did backfired, however, the actor isn’t generally fond of method acting.
Robert Pattinson isn’t a fan of method acting
Preparing for his time on Good Time was the first time Robert Pattinson went method for a role, as the actor isn’t a big fan of the practice. Reflecting on the subject during his time on Variety’s Actor on Actors series with Jennifer Lopez, The Batman star expressed his criticisms regarding method acting, as he stated,
“I always say about people who do method acting, you only ever see people do the method when they’re playing an a–holes. You never see someone being lovely to everyone while they’re really deep in character.”
The Lighthouse star succeeded in redeeming himself as an actor through his time working with the likes of David Cronenberg and Robert Eggers, thus coming a long way since his days in Twilight. But considering the huge impact of the franchise, it’s easy to see why many fans can’t separate Edward Cullen from Robert Pattinson.
