Naruto boasts a roster that includes multiple powerful characters possessing unique abilities. These are based on the Chakra Pathway, an energy system that is based on physical and spiritual powers, and the best chakra harnesser is undoubtedly the protagonist himself, Naruto Uzumaki.

Uzumaki has a plethora of abilities including the Rasenshuriken, Shadow Clone Jutsu, Truth-Seeking Balls, and different elemental Rasengans. These are further strengthened during his beast release. The Nine-Tailed Fox form became a hit when it debuted in episode 247 of Naruto Shippuden and it impressed a renowned mangaka as well.

Yoshihiro Togashi Liked The Idea Of The Nine-Tailed Beast Form Of Naruto

The Nine-Tails concept was seen right at the beginning. Chapter 1 tells the story of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox named Kurama decimating the village of Konohagakure. After much mayhem, it is eventually sealed in the infant Naruto Uzumaki by the combined efforts of his mother, Kushina, and Minato, before they die. The release of the Fox Demon was the most anticipated part of the story and fans weren’t left disappointed by the powers and form it gave to the shinobi.

Hunter x Hunter writer Yoshihiro Togashi chanced upon Naruto Issue 1 when his assistant, who had contacts with Masashi Kishimoto, bought him the manga series. He was intrigued by the Nine-Tailed Beast idea as revealed during a joint interview with Kishimoto that was published in the Naruto 10th Anniversary Chronicle Book Mini. His words are transcribed by Hunterpedia:

“I’m often asked my opinion about new upcoming manga, one of my assistants (the one who knows Kishimoto) brought me the first chapter of Naruto, given the fact that I didn’t know he was friends with Kishimoto I gave him my honest thoughts, I recall saying that it was very interesting, the concept of the Nine Tails would be a great asset in the development of the story.”

While Kishimoto appreciated the feedback on his Nine Tails concept from Togashi, he knew he had to be considerate in not overusing the Tailed Beast form as it would have become redundant. He saved it for special boss-type fights and the rest is history.

Naruto’s Nine-Tailed Beast Form Transformation Explained

Kurama used to be a destructive beast that wanted to forge Naruto into a weapon. However, he slowly turned into a more compassionate and kind creature that could be summoned at will by the host. The change in mindset was brought by Uzumaki’s exploits in battles along with his personality.

The corrupting force of Kurama was first unleashed during the battle with Haku in the Land of Waves arc. After multiple inner battles, Naruto Uzumaki managed to master the One-Tail form during his battle with Sasuke Uchiha at the Valley of the End and defeated him.

Over the course of the manga, Naruto tapped into his powers numerous times for the greater good. He wielded control over Kurama for some time. When Uzumaki finally snapped, it was in his fight against Orochimaru in Episode 42 of Shippūden anime. He manifested the Four-Tailed with his rage and almost killed Orochimaru by inflicting severe injuries just like he did with Jiraiya.

Once again, rage was the primary factor for Kurama overtaking Uzumaki’s body. The Six-Tails form and the Seven-Tails form were seen in his fights with Pain although they were in a filler arc. Just when the beast seemed to have been gaining full control, it was proven the opposite.

Naruto tamed Kurama when he trained with Killer Bee before the Fourth Great Ninja War. The full release of his chakra, the Nine-Tails Chakra Mode, occurred shortly afterward. Uzumaki gained full authority over Sage of the Six Paths power and Tailed Beast Mode and was able to overpower 5 Tailed Beasts at once.

Unfortunately, Naruto loses Kurama in Boruto: Episode 218. The Tailed Beast who started as a fiend inside Naruto’s body but ended up as his closest supporter seemingly dies after Uzumaki uses Baryon Mode to channel each strand of Kurama’s chakra to defeat Isshiki Otsutsuki.
