In August 2022, DC Films and Warner Bros. Discovery announced that Batgirl, starring Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon / Batgirl, was canceled due to the company’s cost-cutting measures. Many fans were left disheartened as the film was in the post-production stage but was shelved at the last minute.

In a 2022 interview with Variety, actress Penélope Cruz claimed that she would love to be a part of a Batgirl project if director Pedro Almodóvar creates the movie,

“That sounds so cool. I don’t even need to read that script… I haven’t done that genre, but with Pedro it would be revolutionary.”

Cruz has collaborated with Almodóvar on multiple occasions, giving fans outstanding movies like Parallel Mothers (2021). At the AFI Fest screening of his film Parallel Mothers in 2021, Almodóvar explained that he wants to create his own version of Batgirl (via Variety),

“I would like to do something with Batgirl, but I would have to do it in my own way.”

Almodóvar and Cruz have amazing chemistry on set and that explains why the actress said she doesn’t even need to read the script if Almodóvar is directing it.

The development of Batgirl began in March 2017 and by May 2021, the film was confirmed to be an HBO Max original. The film featured Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon / Batgirl, J. K. Simmons as James Gordon, Jacob Scipio as Anthony Bressi, Brendan Fraser as Ted Carson / Firefly, and Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne / Batman. The filming of the movie began in November 2021 and wrapped up in March 2022.

In August 2022, DC Films and Warner Bros. Discovery announced that the film would be shelved due to the company’s cost-cutting measures and they planned to focus on their theatrical releases. Keeping in mind the character’s popularity, Warner Bros. decided to keep the idea on the back burner. There are low chances of this project reaching the theatres any time soon, but it would certainly be exciting to see a Hollywood legend like Penélope Cruz be a part of it.
