Mel Gibson is an award-winning director known for his ability to create epic and visually appealing films. Back in 2016, when discussing moviemaking, directing, and the cost of filmmaking, Gibson dissed superhero movies in an interview with Deadline Hollywood. When asked what he thought about movies costing more than $200 million, Mel Gibson replied,

“I don’t believe so. I look at them and scratch my head. I’m really baffled by it. I think there’s a lot of waste, but maybe if I did one of those things with the green screens I’d find out different. I don’t know. Maybe they do cost that much. I don’t know. It seems to me that you could do it for less.”

When informed about Zack Snyder‘s Batman Vs Superman costing over $250 Million without the cost of marketing, Gibson brutally said,

“And it’s a piece of shit.”

And if that wasn’t enough, he went on to make comparisons between real-life superheroes and comic-book superheroes, joking,

“Do you know what the difference between real superheroes and comic book superheroes is? Real superheroes didn’t wear spandex. So I don’t know. Spandex must cost a lot.”

His dislike of superheroes even resulted in him losing on million-dollar movies like Thor, as he rejected the role of the fierce and formidable Odin. His jibe resulted in fans criticizing and making fun of the filmmaker, calling him a hypocrite after knowing the Braveheart actor was in talks with Robert Downey Jr. for directing Iron Man 4.

The last Iron Man movie came out in 2013, and since then fans had been wanting Robert Downey Jr to come back with the fourth installment of the popular MCU series. Downey Jr., however, had agreed to return if his long-time friend Mel Gibson would direct the movie. Gibson even responded to Downey’s comments, saying,

“I’m pretty good at directing. I think I got some statues for it. I think I can do it.”

Robert Downey Jr. regards Gibson as the man who helped him get his life back together when there was no one to help him out. Having Gibson direct the fourth installment would have been his way of preparing the actor and director for his continued support during his struggling years.
