Johnny Depp, the renowned Hollywood actor, is known for his distinctive and memorable performances on-screen. Over his extensive career spanning decades, he has portrayed a range of characters, with Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean film series being his most popular role. While he steals the show every time he takes the screen, the Oscar-nominated actor has revealed that there are certain types of characters he would never consider portraying on the silver screen.
Johnny Depp Would Never Play Iconic Literary Characters
During an interview with Men’s Health, Johnny Depp revealed that there are some literary characters he would never consider playing in a movie. He claimed that he would not do so because of his deep appreciation for the characters and their original depictions in classic books.
The Tourist star mentioned some of the iconic classic novels, including J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye. The protagonist of the 1951 novel, Holden Caulfield, has captivated the readers for decades, and Depp expressed that he should remain as the author painted him in the minds of readers.
Depp emphasized his belief, saying, “You have these great characters… like Picasso: you would never do him justice, it’s best to stay away.” He also talked about Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, as he shared that these books have a special place in his heart. On the Road has been adapted into a film by Walter Salles.
However, Depp claimed that he never thought these books should be made into a film. He said that it’s hard to imagine someone else as Sal Paradise, as the character is an autobiographical representation of the author himself. He said that such characters are “too beautiful to touch,” as he shared that he has not seen its film adaptation by Walter Salles.
Johnny Depp Enjoyed Playing Captain Jack Sparrow
Johnny Depp also shared his experience portraying the role of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. He shared that when he is in the role of Jack Sparrow, he’s almost always smiling, and it brings him joy as an actor. He said,
“When I play Captain Jack there is rarely a time when I am not smiling, just being him makes me smile. He can do anything, say anything… “Hello love!” As cheeky as can be.”
He also shared that the character allowed him to break free from his natural shyness and explore a broader range as an actor. Depp’s compelling and distinctive performance has made Captain Jack Sparrow a beloved and iconic figure in the world of cinema. However, reports have claimed that he might not return to the role as Depp has no intention of working with Disney again.
