In a conversation with Inverse, Simon Racioppa and Robert Kirkman emphasized that Invincible had previously explored multiverse in its comics. Also, their reasons for doing so just differ from the ongoing trend. As Racioppa asserted:

“We’re not doing it because everyone is doing it. We’re doing it because that’s where the story goes and where it went 17 years ago. Our approach is character-first. It’s not an excuse to bring back the Michael Keaton Invincible, because we don’t have that. We don’t have other versions other than the comic books. So for us, it’s character-based.”

He also said that it’s a “storytelling device used to explore character. It’s not a marketing device [for them].” Here, Racioppa puts light on the fact that they are not simply following a trend. Their decision is driven by the narrative’s direction because it aligns with the comic’s history.

The showrunner said that they prioritize character development over using it as an excuse for reintroducing characters from other versions, like the Michael Keaton Invincible character.” He was sarcastically mocking James Gunn’s The Flash. Their focus is on building the story with a character-based approach. And that’s how they added a great layer to another character in Season 2.

The creators of Invincible believe that releasing a second season during a period of superhero fatigue is a great idea. Invincible is for those who love superheroes and want a fresh take on the genre. So, it’s exhilarating for people who are looking for something different from the usual superhero narratives.

As Simon Racioppa said, “A lot of movies and shows are starting to feel the same. But if someone comes along and reinvents it in a different way, with a cool story, that’s going to work.”

At this time, Angstrom Levy — one of Invincible‘s major antagonists from the comics made his animated debut in Season 2. His major ability is to open portals to different dimensions within the multiverse. Though his story in this season is largely the same, he is making the multiversal madness even more exciting.
