The new trailer of the upcoming MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine was released earlier this week. The trailer gives a full glimpse of Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine and sees him team up with Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool. The film would be a multiversal story, with Wolverine dealing with ‘letting down his world’ and the mission helping him get over it.
To add to the hype, Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld took to his social media to appreciate the film. Having already seen it, the comic book creator compared the action sequences to that of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and even teased that the film would be one of the ‘best comic book films of all time’.
Deadpool Creator Rob Liefeld Appreciates Deadpool & Wolverine
Ryan Reynolds began his journey as Deadpool in 2016 when he starred and co-produced Deadpool. The film was a massive success, with many lauding Reynolds’ performance. The film’s sequel also received praise, especially for its R-rated action scenes and dialogues. When Fox Studios was acquired by Disney, fans were assured that the series would retain the R-rating (via EW).
The new trailer of Deadpool & Wolverine, the third film of the franchise and the character’s debut in the MCU, assured fans that the film would retain its R-rating. With bloody action and unhinged language, the trailer showed the two characters joining hands for the first time on screen and going on a multiversal mission.
While fans were already hyped for the film with the trailer, the creator of Deadpool, Rob Liefeld mentioned on X (formerly Twitter) that he had watched the film and gave a spoiler-free review, which has hyped the fans even more. Liefeld compared the film’s action sequences to that of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and mentioned that the film would be one of the best comic book films of all time. He said,
“I’ve been telling everyone how great this movie looks and it’s the BEST action since Winter Soldier. The car fight! Forest fight! The ********** fight! It’ll be up there with the best Comic Book Film of all time!”
While Liefeld did not mention which fight he was talking about, choosing to censor it to avoid spoilers, he seemed to be extremely impressed with the action sequences in the Shawn Levy-directed film. The trailer also has a reference to the creator with a shop named ‘Liefeld’s’ being seen selling ‘just feet’.
Is Captain America: The Winter Soldier The Best Marvel Film?
When Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld gave his review of the upcoming MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine, he compared the action sequences to the Russo Brothers’ Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The second solo film of Chris Evans’ Captain America saw the first collaboration of the Russo Brothers with Marvel. They would go on to direct Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
Among the ever-expanding roster of MCU films and TV series, Captain America: The Winter Soldier still seems to be holding up due to how different it was from the formula of the MCU. Building on a story of espionage, the film positioned itself as a thriller among the likes of The French Connection and Three Days of the Condor (via Total Film).
Many fans have done retrospectives, especially after it celebrated its 10th anniversary, and all of them claim that the film’s action sequences and storytelling set the standard high for the MCU, which the franchise is yet to live up to. A Reddit user mentioned that the best part of the film was its consistent tone and well-choreographed fight sequences,
“The action and fight scenes are some of the best in the genre, rivaling DD fight scenes. The biggest difference between it and other MCU movies is that there’s an appropriate use of humor and a gritty tone…The villain is great too. Bucky had an intimidating presence throughout the entire movie and gave off a Terminator vibe that kept you on the edge. I wish more MCU movies would replicate this gritty tone.”
While Deadpool & Wolverine may not have such a gritty tone as The Winter Soldier, the film still needs to match up the standard of the Chris Evans starrer. Rob Liefeld’s comparison may either hurt the film or make it one of the best MCU films.
