David Lynch made a surprising appearance towards the end of Steven Spielberg’s 2022 film The Fabelmans. In the film, which is inspired by Spielberg’s own journey as a young filmmaker, Lynch plays another legendary director John Ford who gives the young Sammy Fabelman some advice about directing (which happened to Spielberg).

Lynch talked to Empire about what made him accept the role (which hilariously turned out to be a bag of Cheetos) while also revealing that he liked the scene despite not wanting to do it at first. He also ridiculed veteran actors like George Clooney and Harrison Ford by saying that he wanted to give their careers a chance. He told the outlet,

“At first I didn’t want to do it. And the reason is, when it comes to acting, I’ve purposely tried to stay away from it, giving the likes of Harrison Ford and George Clooney a chance at their careers…Well, Cheetos, number one, I love them.

And any chance I can, I get them. But I know that they’re not exactly health food. So when I do leave the house and I get a chance to… But I don’t get them that often, honestly. If I do get them, I want a big bag.”

Lynch’s amazing sense of humor is evident in his comments and the director often infuses them in his films also. His cameo in the film was a great and hilarious one and Spielberg did a great job by casting him in the role.

“She’s a special person in my life. She encouraged me to do it. She thought that it would be very enjoyable, and it turned out to be very enjoyable. I thought that Peter Bogdanovich would be better for it. But Steven said no. He said, ‘David, you’re the one to do it.’ And so he talked me into it, really.”

The director has not made a film since 2006’s Inland Empire and seeing him in a hilarious cameo was a great sight for fans of the director. He really nailed the look and persona of the great director in his short cameo.
