Gunn is also launching the first love action DCU film in his universe with 2025’s Superman: Legacy. Gunn is known for bringing to life obscure characters and his announcement last year was evidence of that. Now, a new report suggests that he is launching yet another offbeat DC team that not any fans will be familiar with.

When Zack Snyder was building his DCU, he wanted to bring together the core Justice League team including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and others, and face Darkseid. His Justice League film was a step in that direction. But everything fell apart and now Gunn is building DC from the ground-up with a new direction.

With many projects in development, Gunn is trying to fulfill Snyder’s dream with a certain twist. According to industry insider Jeff Sneider (via YouTube), Gunn is reportedly developing a Jurassic League animated film with Brian Lynch who co-wrote the 2016 hit animated film The Secret Life of Pets tapped as the writer of the film. This continues Gunn’s trend of bringing obscure comic book characters to life.

The Jurassic League is a very recent publication in DC comics as the Daniel Warren Johnson and Juan Gedeon-created comic issue was released in 2022. It focuses on an alternate reality where the Justice League members are imagined as anthropomorphic dinosaurs. The story revolves around the team trying to stop Darkyloseid (Darkseid) as he plans to wreak havoc and destroy the entire world.

The Jurassic League constitutes Superman (Brachiosaurus), Batman (Allosaurus), Wonder Woman (Triceratops), Flash (Velociraptor), Green Lantern (Parasaurolophus), and Aquaman (Baronyx). Sneider posits that the project is in early development and Gunn will take his time with it. If true, fans can look forward to more updates about the project from Gunn sometime later this year.

James Gunn is set to start shooting Superman: Legacy next month. Over the past few months, the director has been updating fans about the pre-production process of the film. He also recently posted a photo with the entire cast of the film after they did a table read of the film’s script. Gunn has been tight-lipped about the budget of the upcoming film.

However, a fan asked the director on Threads whether a recent report by BizJournals.com claimed that the film’s budget was a whopping $364 million. Gunn dismissed the report and made fun of it by questioning how a random outlet became aware of the budget of his film. He wrote,

“Absolutely not. How in the world do they think they know what our budget is?”

The actual production budget of the film will be revealed once the film finishes filming. Gunn has assembled an impressive cast for the film led by David Corenswet’s Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane. The film will be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
