Recently, DC announced a new animated Justice League movie based on the Crisis on Infinite Earths events. The animated Justice League is scheduled for a 2024 release. Right after the news, speculation of a potential live-action Justice League surfaced online as James Gunn has already hired new actors for quite a few DC characters. A live-action Justice League is not happening anytime soon, as the director commented “No” on Threads, commenting on the rumor.

Currently, Gunn is more focused on Superman: Legacy. Written and directed by Gunn himself, the new Superman movie is in development and the director is quite excited about it. Gunn posted on Threads,

“Superman: Legacy opens two years from today. It may seem far away to many of you, but it’s close to me!”

“We have a lot to do between now and then. But I haven’t been more excited about a project in forever… and this cast, slowly coming together… holy cow…”

As of now, it is highly unlikely that a new Justice League live-action will roll out anytime soon but certainly, the animated version is an indication of a potential unification of the major DC characters. But if it happens, it will take time because DC is in the early stages of rebooting the major characters and movies.

Gunn is set to introduce a newer version of DC Universe with Superman: Legacy. The confirmed actors of the film, as revealed by the director, are going to appear in the new universe he is building. Recently,  Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi joined DC as Mister Terrific in Gunn’s Superman movie. Earlier, Gunn also confirmed that his search for Superman and Lois Lane was over when he cast David Corenswet as the Man of Steel and Rachel Brosnahan as his lade love, and Daily Planet Reporter, Lois Lane.

But the inclusion of these characters does have a reason. “They fit the story I’m telling. Story always comes first,” Gunn commented on Threads. Further, the director confirmed that Jimmy Olsen — a Daily Planet photojournalist and friend of Lois Lane and Clark Kent —  will be in his latest Superman movie. The story of his new DC film will be centered around Lois and Superman. “The primary story most definitely revolves around Superman and Lois.”

Gunn further revealed that the reason behind casting Fillion is because of his hair. “Giving my old pal Nate a bowl cut might have been my primary reason for casting him,” Gunn wrote on Threads. Also, Fillion’s Green Lantern is Guy Gardner and he will play the character across DC Universe which includes The Green Lanterns show and the show is not separated from DC.

Superman: Legacy is scheduled for theatrical release on 11 July 2025.
