Jennifer Lawrence turned the clock back this summer, marking her return to the big screen with 2000s-style sex comedy No Hard Feelings. Starring opposite Andrew Barth Feldman, Lawrence plays the role of a 32-year-old down-on-luck cab driver who accepts a very strange Craiglist request in exchange for a new car to save her childhood home.
The movie did reasonably well at the box office, grossing $89.5 million globally. Meanwhile, ever since its streaming debut, it has garnered positive reactions and currently tops Netflix’s streaming charts. Fans have observed and expressed plenty of different things about the movie, but no one thought of comparing Feldman with Christian Bale apart from Lawrence for a very interesting reason.
What Connection Jennifer Lawrence Noticed Between Christian Bale and Her 21-Year-Old Co-star
In No Hard Feelings, Andrew Barth Feldman played the role of Percy Becker, an introverted 19-year-old son of a wealthy couple. To bring him out of his shell before he attends Princeton University in the fall, his parents rope in Maddie Barker (Jennifer Lawrence) to date him in exchange for a Buick Regal.
Maddie then tries different methods, including taking Percy to the beach for skinny dipping, to seduce him. The 33-year-old made plenty of headlines for her full frontal nudity scene and undoubtedly carried the movie with her hilarious performance.
Meanwhile, Feldman didn’t seem out of place opposite the Oscar-winning actress, who described her experience of working alongside the 21-year-old actor as similar to working with Christian Bale because of their improvisational abilities. She worked with Bale in crime drama American Hustle almost a decade ago.
In an interview with ET, she was asked about the comparison she made, and Lawrence accordingly explained:
“The reason that I make that connection in my mind was because the most improv I had ever done I think with someday was with Christian Bale in American Hustle at that point. I was like 23 and I remember feeling like we were both really like running. I was really proud of myself for feeling like I was keeping up with Christian Bale. So when I say it’s the exact same as acting with Christian Bale, there was just nowhere that I could go or we could go or that Gene [Stupnitsky] could throw at us that Andrew couldn’t just pick up and just you know make a touchdown with it.”
Feldman didn’t have much to add and all he could say was that it meant so much to him.
How Jennifer Lawrence’s American Hustle Co-star Puzzled Robert De Niro
While Feldman impressed Lawrence with his improvisational skills, Bale stunned Robert De Niro with his method acting on the set of American Hustle.
The Oscar-winning actor portrayed con artist Irving Rosenfeld, who works for FBI agent Richie DiMaso after getting caught red-handed. The 49-year-old’s character was loosely based on con artist Melvin Weinberg.
Accordingly, to fit the description of his character, Bale put on a lot of weight, going from 185 to 228 pounds, and sported a bald look.
Director David O. Russell revealed to Contact Music that Bale so impressively managed to assume his character that when De Niro met the whole cast he failed to recognize him. Russell had to reintroduce them later.
