The story behind John Cena’s You Can’t See Me movement

If you have watched WWE matches of John Cena, then you must be well aware of the popular catchphrase of the wrestler, You Can’t See Me. As he says the line, he waves his hand in front of his face and looks into the eyes of his opponent in the ring.

The Fast X star opened up on his signature phrase and gesture during an interview at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The actor was on the show to promote his upcoming HBO Max series, Peacemaker. Cena shared that the whole gesture started as a dare, which ended up creating a meme fest on social media.

“I developed a special maneuver in the WWE called the “You Can’t See Me.” Which, I put my hand in front of my face and say, ‘You Can’t See Me.’ The reason I did this is on, a younger brother, Sean.”

Cena shared that his brother Sean had once heard Cena’s theme song for WWE entry to the ring, and he held his palm in front of his face and made a similar motion, nodding his head slightly. Trainwreck star found the action stupid, but his brother dared him to do it. The actor did the same, and the movement went viral.

On being asked the meaning of his catchphrase, You Can’t See Me the actor replied that it was a method of belittling his opponent. It is a way of saying that the opponent is not at his level. He added that now it has become his superpower that makes him invisible.
