Gaining prominence for playing the role of Shane Walsh on the AMC series The Walking Dead, Jon Bernthal ventured into the MCU as Frank Castle aka Punisher. Debuting in the Daredevil TV series in 2016, Bernthal later reprised his role in a standalone series The Punisher in 2017.
After working on multiple MCU projects, Jon Bernthal recently addressed his future with Marvel. Making headlines for returning with Daredevil: Born Again, Bernthal mentioned that whatever the future might hold for his character, he wants to do it right. Unlike Henry Cavill’s The Witcher, Bernthal promised integrity to the source material.
Jon Bernthal Addressed His Future as Punisher in MCU
Appearing in MCU as Frank Castle aka Punisher, Jon Bernthal stole hearts with his performance in Charlie Cox‘s Daredevil series (2016) and his own show The Punisher (2017). Further, the actor made headlines for being set to reprise the role in the upcoming show Daredevil: Born Again.
Speaking about the potential future of his character in MCU during his interview with Collider, following his confirmation to return in Daredevil: Born Again, Jon Bernthal promised his fans that he will make sure it’s done right. Unwilling to compromise on the source material, Bernthal claimed that he would not deviate from the original storyline.
“I think there’s a reason why that character has resonated as deeply and strongly as he has, in the hearts and minds of comic book fans… and people all over the globe. I think there’s a little bit of Frank Castle in everybody. He exists very strongly inside me and I care about that character deeply.”

“I also know that it’s absolutely essential that if we do it, we do it right and we have real sacred integrity to the source material and to what isat the core of Frank. I’m gonna do my absolute best to make sure that, if and when we do it, we do it right.”
Assuring his fans and audiences at large about maintaining the integrity of the source material for his character, Jon Bernthal almost implied that won’t make the same mistake that Henry Cavill did in The Witcher.
Jon Bernthal Promises To Not Make Henry Cavill’s Mistake
Jon Bernthal’s promise to maintain the authenticity of the source material for his character in MCU reminded fans of how Henry Cavill compromised the source for The Witcher. Although the Netflix show won over audiences and earned praise, few fans were infuriated by its deviations from the source material.
Despite its initial fame, The Witcher eventually lost a major portion of its viewership for straying too far from the source material. Apart from issues with CGI, costume, and the replacement of Henry Cavill with Liam Hemsworth in the titular role, fans were also routinely angered as the show made painful changes to the script.
During an interview for Wyborcza, executive producer of The Witcher, Tomek Baginski candidly addressed the adaptation changes that infuriated fans. He claimed that some of the changes were due to “production chaos” and at times it may have gone “too far”. But Baginski noted that although the changes were “painful for us, and for me too”, they had to be made.
The Witcher team might have gone too far with adaptation changes in order to carry on production, which angered fans, but Jon Bernthal promised he wouldn’t repeat the same mistake with Punisher.
