Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have been married for 23 years now, and are still very much in love. The two are often spotted together at public events and post loving pictures of each other on social media. However, like all couples, they hit a pretty rocky patch during 2013 but got back together stronger than ever soon afterward.
Prior to their break in 2013, the Ghost in the Darkness star had made a vile accusation against his wife. But things got better and the actor even received some fatherly advice from his father and Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas about how to keep his marriage alive.
Michael Douglas’ Vile Accusations Against Catherine Zeta-Jones
Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones tied the knot in 2000 and have been growing strong ever since. They are one of the most iconic and beloved celebrity couples, who have managed to make it this far, a feat hardly seen in the film industry.
However, back in 2010, Douglas had made some remarks that fans and media found were indecent and disrespectful to his wife. Regarding his oral cancer diagnosis, the actor had remarked in an interview with The Guardian,
“Because, without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV [human papillomavirus], which actually comes about from cunnilingus. I mean, I did worry if the stress caused by my son’s incarceration (referring to his son’s legal troubles due to drug possession) didn’t help trigger it. But yeah, it’s a s*xually transmitted disease that causes cancer.”
Although he maintained that his oral cancer could have been because of his heavy drinking and smoking habit, his comments caused an uproar in the public. While his oral cancer can be linked to cunnilingus, doctors maintain that it is a factor but not the sole cause (via The Guardian). However, many of his fans and media still expressed that it was too much information to be shared with the public.
Kirk Douglas’ Fatherly Advice To Son To Save His Marriage
Much like his son, Kirk Douglas had a happy and long second marriage that lasted until his death. But before his passing, the late actor gave his son a valuable piece of advice that might have helped save his marriage.
The elder Douglas was close to both his son and daughter-in-law, so on their 19th marriage anniversary, he sent a sweet letter to them,
“Dear Michael and Catherine, Happy anniversary! Michael, you have learned a very important lesson, to stay married you must obey your wife! Keep practicing what I do with my wife.”
Catherine Zeta-Jones posted the picture of the letter on Instagram while adding how touched she was to have received that letter.
