Since rising to prominence in the mid-2000s with Night at the Museum, Rami Malek’s career has witnessed him starring at the forefront of several acclaimed classics. However, the highlight of his illustrious career remains his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody, which deservedly earned the Mr Robot Star his first Oscar Win for Best Actor.
But doing the British Icon justice was far from easy for the Oppenheimer Star, as the actor admitted to being under immense pressure after initially taking the gig of the legendary Queen Frontman.
Tackling the Biggest Role of His Career Was Not an Easy Job for Rami Malek
While the biopic itself opened to divisive reviews, most critics and fans shared common ground when it came to Rami Malek‘s portrayal of the iconic musician. But perfecting the part was not smooth sailing for the actor, as Malek felt huge pressure taking the biggest role of his career, but the Oscar winner didn’t let the pressure get the better of him. Speaking with The Guardian, the actor gave an insight into his mindset at the time, stating,
“Kind of the gun-to-the-head moment,” he said. “What do you do? And I like to think if it’s a fight or flight situation, I’m going to fight. The scariest endeavours that I’ve chosen to take in my life have been the most fulfilling and rewarding. And this has proven to defend that equation.”
Despite controversies upon its release, the film did wonders at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing biopic at the time before getting dethroned by Oppenheimer, which too includes Malek.
A Sequel to Bohemian Rhapsody Sounds Tempting Said Brian May
Earlier this year, Brian May, the lead guitarist of Queen, ignited discussion surrounding a possible sequel to the 2018 musical drama, expressing that the idea is “tempting”. He further implied that the possible sequel would start right where the original film left off, as he showcased his admiration for everyone who was involved in the biopic. He told the Daily Star:
“We’ve been talking about it. I felt proud of it and the people who played us were just phenomenal. It’s so tempting to do the sequel – it would be worth it just to work with those boys again.”
While it can’t be said for sure if a possible sequel to Bohemian Rhapsody will ever see the light of day, witnessing Rami Malek back as Mercury would be enticing for fans.
Bohemian Rhapsody is available to rent on Apple TV.
