The Lawmen Bass Reeves episode “Part VI” delivers the most complex performance of David Oyelowo’s season as the titular character. The story continues to delve into chipping away at the lawman’s moral compass, which he has begun questioning since coming across an old friend from his past.

As tonight’s episode, Lawmen Bass Reeves progresses, we continue to see the groundwork for problematic family issues could bring those concerns full circle. One, his daughter Sally, is dealing with the looming threat of retribution. The other is Jennie pleading with Bass to get her husband back when he had light in his eyes.

Here’s what happened in Lawmen Bass Reeves Season 1, Episode 6:

  • Bass (David Oyelowo) and Billy Crow (Forrest Goodluck) deliver “Jack Rabbitt” Cole to a Texas Ranger at the Red River border. To Bass’s surprise, it’s Esau Pierce (Barry Pepper), one of his former commanding officers when fighting for the South.
  • Esau looks weathered but content. He now has a ranch in Fort Worth. He will deliver Cole there. He astutely observes that Bass wants to kill him for the murder of Curtis Jumper.
  • However, Bass won’t because of his badge. Before Esau leaves, he tells Bass his home is built on the bones of monsters and can see one from a mile away.
  • Bass is ambushed by some bandits who want to turn him in for the bounty on his head. Billy saves Bass, and they apprehend three of the four bandits and deliver them back to Arkansas.
  • Bass is shorted by fifty dollars when he returns home for his pay. That’s because the courthouse was sent a telegram saying only Cole’s boots were delivered to Esau.
  • Bass asks Ramsey who “Mr. Sundown” is, and before he is hanged, he tells him it’s “Cinco Peso.” Bass thinks about Esau’s words: “You honor the badge” and “the power they give.” He imagines Esau in the room, talking about God and judgment. My interpretation is that Bass thinks Esau is playing God and bringing judgment day to black citizens across the South.
  • He then asks Lynn (Dennis Quaid) if Judge Parker (Donald Sutherland) would issue a “write” for a Texas Ranger. Sherill replies with a laugh that he would not.

Predictions for Lawmen: Bass Reeves Season 1 Episode 7

Lawmen Bass Reeves
The new Paramount+ series Lawmen Bass Reeves premiers November 5th, 2023.
  • Was Esau in the room with Bass at the end of the episode? No, but he has felt his presence like a ghost since he realized he was Mr. Sundown.
  • Will Bass Reeves go after Esau? Of course! Do you know why? Because Lawmen Bass Reeves lives by a code. I guess that Bass will come to realize Esau has been abducting adult black citizens, taking them back to his ranch, killing them, and burying them.
  • The monsters Esau is talking about may be the people he is murdering.
  • Will Jennie (Lauren E. Banks) leave Bass? I doubt it, especially with the prominence of religion and the limited options for women at the time. Like most classic storytelling, Jennie welcomes Bass with welcome arms after he goes after, you know,
  • If Bass Reeves is a limited series, I predict Bass will take off to perform a citizen arrest and quiet execution of Esau.
  • I fear that while Bass is gone on his trip to Texas, the Reeves family will be a victim of a hate crime in their very home.
