The base game was already too big and had to cut some corners like omitting locations, lore and even excluding a character, Messmer was seen in the trailer and it appears that the character will have a significant role in the DLC.

Shadow Of The Erdtree Will Feature A Missing Character From Elden Ring

Shadow of the Erdtree will expand upon the lore of Elden Ring and will allow players to explore new regions and acquire new items.

Cuts and changes are common adjustments that creatives had to make in film and games for a more concise and self-contained package. The lore that George R.R. Martin wrote for the IP is so vast and rich that not all of it can be included in the base game. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki shared details about the post-launch content where it takes place within the Elden Ring universe, and what is in store for returning fans.

While it would have been cool to see Messmer and other characters that were meant to appear in the base game, this method of storytelling will give the game and the players enough breathing room. Messmer is described as a demigod like Miquella, Malenia, and other demigods which adds an extra layer of mystery and depth to this character.

The lore is rich enough to give the developers enough material to work with for who knows how much more downloadable content or it could evolve into something more ambitious like a full-on sequel.

Elden Ring Shadow Of The Erdtree Is Not The End

The world of Elden Ring could be getting bigger and bigger.

The development team of FromSoftware should muster all of their creativity and pour these ideas into making a worthy follow-up as they come off the heels and succeed from the base game, which is no easy feat. The story for this DLC needs to be compelling, if not more so than the previous entry. Miyazaki shared that players will discover throughout the story why Messmer was missing.

Sometimes cutting corners to avoid a bloated game is the best path forward, and saving the idea for another project with a more fleshed-out roadmap will reap the benefits tenfold, or it could just be corporate greed of milking a franchise by chopping content into multiple parts rather than delivering a full package. Either way, if fans show support, surely the publishers and developers will do their best to keep gamers hooked.

Messmer and the entirety of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC could just be a taste for an ever-growing universe and players will continue to invest in this IP for years to come. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki is very optimistic about the future of Elden Ring and in tradition with previous FromSoftware games where they aim to do better than before.
