The Jurassic World movies led by Chris Pratt brought a modern twist to the beloved franchise. Each film in the modern trilogy grossed more than a billion at the box office, proving the enormous financial viability of the franchise. However, all three films received mixed reviews from fans, who deemed them inferior to Steven Spielberg’s original films.

Universal is now eyeing to develop more movies of the franchise. New information about the new project has come forward, and it seems the studio is looking to do a reboot of the franchise with a new director and cast.

After the huge success of the modern Jurassic World trilogy led by Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, Universal is fast-tracking a new movie in the franchise. This comes after 2022’s Jurassic World: Dominion continued the great streak of the trilogy as it grossed a billion dollars at the box office.

Audiences were, however, not as enthusiastic with the modern trilogy, with the last film receiving the most flak for its illogical narrative. Now, Deadline is reporting that Universal’s new Jurassic World movie (with a script written by David Keopp who wrote the original Jurassic Park films) will be directed by David Leitch who directed 2018’s Deadpool 2 and is coming this year with Ryan Gosling’s The Fall Guy.

Deadline also stated that none of the cast of the modern trilogy (Pratt, Dallas Howard) or the original films (Sam Neill, Laura Dern), would be returning for this new film, making this a reboot of the franchise featuring a new cast. Fans expressed their disinterest in the film, with many claiming that no one was clamoring for a new Jurassic World film. Here are some of the reactions on X,

The film is coming very soon than one might expect as Deadline states that the film will be released in theatres on July 2, 2025. One can expect the studio to announce casting news in the coming months. It remains to be seen if Leitch can move the needle and generate any interest in the new film.

Colin Trevorrow Laid The Groundwork for More Jurassic World Movies

Colin Trevorrow returned to helm the last film in the Jurassic World trilogy after directing the first film in 2015. With Jurassic World: Dominion, the director wanted to plant seeds for the future of the franchise even if he did not return to direct the future film.

In an interview with Empire, Trevorrow stated that he made sure to evolve the franchise from a narrative about dinosaurs into an interesting co-existing world between humans and dinosaurs. While the previous five films were about dinosaurs, he is confident that what he teased at the ending of Jurassic World: Dominion will take the franchise in a more interesting and unique direction forward. He said,

“I specifically did something different than the other films in order to change the DNA of the franchise,” he explains – a move taken to provide fresh opportunities down the line. “The previous five films are plots about dinosaurs. This one is a story about characters in a world in which they coexist with dinosaurs.

For the franchise to be able to move forward – because it’s inherently unfranchisable, there probably should have only been one Jurassic Park – but if we’re gonna do it, how can I allow them to tell stories in a world in which dinosaurs exist, as opposed to, here’s another reason why we’re going to an island?”

David Leitch is now going to take the franchise in a brand new direction, and it does not seem like he is going to integrate elements from previous Jurassic World films. It remains to be seen whether Leitch brings back any supporting characters or elements that Trevorrow teased in Jurassic World: Dominion.
