The Dakota Johnson starrer Madame Web has hit theaters to scathing reviews, with critics labeling it as one of the worst superhero movies yet, describing it as a “boring, cringe-fest extravaganza.” While the early reviews and remarks surrounding the movie had already set the tone for what fans could expect from the superhero film, there was still anticipation among Spider-Man enthusiasts for potential surprise appearances by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
However, early viewers of the superhero film have revealed that although the film introduces Peter Parker to the Sony Spider-Verse, fans may not get what they have been hoping from Madame Web.
Does Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man Appear in Sony’s Madame Web?
Sony’s superhero film Madame Web was expected to be a multiverse project. However, following its release, the film has been assumed to be more like a standalone film with no apparent connection to its previous Spider-Man or Venom movies.
Earlier reports suggested that the film was expected to be set in the ’90s, and would be in the same timeline as Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man, and the timeline was later shifted to 2003. However, it sets up Peter Parker’s origin story at the very early point of his birth.
While introducing Cassandra Webb, the film also follows along with Ben Parker (Adam Scott), who becomes an uncle to an unnamed nephew by the end of the film. However, the identity of Peter Parker in this universe remains uncertain due to the timeline misalignment with either version of the existing Spider-Man.
Notably, fans have also remarked on the absence of any Spider-Man incarnation in Madame Web. This could be due to the reported alterations during the film’s production. Reports also revealed that the movie went through reshoots to remove references to Garfield’s Spider-Man and Dakota Johnson also suggested the same in a recent interview.
Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web Went Through Drastic Changes
In a recent interview with The Wrap, Dakota Johnson discussed the significant changes Madame Web underwent from its initial concept. The movie follows Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic who gets psychic abilities and attempts to save three young women from an adversary, Ezekiel Sims.
However, the lead star of the film has shared that its story went through “drastic changes,” as she said, “And I can’t even tell you what they were.” It is believed that these changes could be related to the inclusion of Spider-Man, potentially Andrew Garfield’s version.
While there is a possibility that the makers had planned to include Andrew Garfield in the film initially, these seemed to have changed on the way to the final outcome. And it still remains uncertain whether the Madame Web universe features a Spider-Man or not.
Peter Parker is presumably born by the end of the movie, leading one of the characters to remark on Ben’s impending unclehood, saying, “Ben gets to be an uncle now…all of the fun and none of the responsibility.” Cassie’s response to this, however, suggests Uncle Ben’s significance in Peter Parker’s life and potentially that she may be privy to Peter’s future.
