Dakota Johnson is a certified memer now. Not because she makes memes but in every other interview of hers, the world of the Internet is blessed with yet another infuriating yet hilarious meme featuring her. And now it seems she has taken her superpower of being a meme to another level in a recent interview.
While promoting her latest and first Marvel flick, Madame Web, the actress was asked to name the three Tom Holland-starrer Spider-Man movies. And whether she was being funny or genuinely unaware, her not being able to name even one movie correctly has yet again started another storm of memes. In the midst of this, most netizens and fans expressed their fury and appeared to be truly angered by her response, attacking her for why Madame Web has been performing so badly.
Dakota Johnson Doesn’t Know What Tom Holland Spider-Man Movies Are Called
Dakota Johnson and memes go a long way back, back to her Fifty Shades of Grey days. After going viral for her immensely popular Ellen DeGeneres interview meme and lately, for that one Madame Web dialogue meme, the actress seems to have unknowingly kicked off another meme phenomenon on the internet.
Starring in a Marvel movie based on the Spider-Man mythos and portraying one of the most titular comic book characters from the web-slinger’s comics, one might think it would have been better to research a little. Yet when Johnson was asked about the iconic Tom Holland-starrer Spider-Man movies and to name them in a recent interview with MTV, Johnson was either completely aloof or appeared to be joking.
Instead of taking the names of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, the actress referred to them as Spider-Man: Here He Comes, Spider-Man: And He’s Back, and The Goblet of Spider-Man, respectively. She even changed the last entry to Harry Spider-Man and the Goblet of Man.
While it looks like she must have been kidding, netizens were not amused and called her out for either playing dumb or not knowing the titles.
Netizens Call Out Dakota Johnson For Not Knowing Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Movies
Dakota Johnson stars as Cassandra Webb in Madame Web, an iconic mutant with psychic abilities from the Spider-Man universe whose powers are closely related to Spider-Man’s. Not only do the characters know each other’s real identities but they have also collaborated numerous times in the comics (see Marvel.com).
And this being her debut superhero/Marvel debut movie, it would have been better for Johnson to pay a little attention to the existing Marvel Cinematic Universe and its related Sony’s Spider-Man universe. Especially since Madame Web is potentially being tied up with other Marvel movies (see Time and People), fans and netizens are angry over Johnson fooling around with the titles of Tom Holland’s billion-dollar-grossing films.
And this is how many of them reacted or responded to her MTV interview on the internet:
She's never doing a superhero film ever again LOL

I mean there’s one thing about phoning it in and just taking a check but cmon. At least pretend like you care somewhat…like why’d she even take the role anyways. It’s not like Nepo baby was gonna run outta money.

What do you expect from the bimbo from 50 shades of grey . I hate actors who do no research on their roles

this is a bad look. she should at least somewhat understand what she’s getting into when taking a role.

This is an attempt to be funny but it's nowhere close.

I’m not saying you’ve gotta be a dedicated viewer and consumer of these movies… but if you’re getting involved with the universe, I do think you should have the decency and respect to do some research… Especially when they’re more successful…

While some called her out for not being funny, others blamed it on her ‘nepo baby’ status, and yet others went ahead to call her out for being the reason why the movie turned out to be so bad. As per the early reviews, Madame Web‘s future looks pretty bleak, almost on the same path as Sony’s previous bomb, Morbius.
And so while some appreciate her attempts to be funny, it would be better for Dakota Johnson to tune down her phenomenon of memes to prevent the movie from gaining any further negative publicity, especially when the superhero movies have been performing so bad lately.
Madame Web is in theatres now.
