Call of Duty has become the face of first-person shooters and competitive gaming, and throughout the years, more publishers have taken on the challenge to develop their take on the genre. Mark Rubin serves as an executive producer of an upcoming first-person shooter game from Ubisoft called XDefiant which is scheduled for release in the next few days.
Amidst the release of the game, Rubin announced that their title would be delayed, and the reasons are not what most people would think. Some are suggesting that the game is trying its hardest to keep up with other mainline competitive live services but Rubin countered by stating they are delaying XDefiant due to technical issues and that no new features are being added.
XDefiant Executive Producer Is Insulted After Claims That Their Game Is A Call Of Duty Reskin
There is nothing more a game developer hates than their work being compared to others. Rubin was greatly insulted when a user on X claimed that their game is more likely a Call of Duty reskin which would suggest that they lack originality.
Just FYI, nothing about our delay is due to any new features. In fact not much has changed from a gameplay standpoint. The delay has been due to the tech issues we've talked about. Whoever said chasing CoD in Tom's report was major eyeroll. 😀

Being compared is insulting but comparing Rubin’s present work with his previous is a step too far. Others are just too excited to hop in the game and soak it in, however, that can be a dangerous sentiment. If developers were to release their games in an unready state it would only result in backlash on the team and an awful experience altogether.
Creativity is a must in a cut-throat business within the entertainment industry, and an impossible challenge for most developers whenever they set out to do a brand-new project. The major obstacle that developers must overcome is finding a way to stand out from a gaming community that is oversaturated with the same basic concept and nature of being competitive.
Ubisoft’s XDefiant Is Being Delayed To Tech Issues, Not Integrating Concepts From Call Of Duty
No matter how hard Ubisoft tries, there will always be comparisons to other multiplayer games. It is an inevitability and it can work in their favor, as long as they avoid making the same mistakes Call of Duty did and not replicate their issues like certain equipment not working as it was intended like the Jak Purifier being way too overpowered.
The tech issues could benefit the team to focus more on how they can stand out while also doing something familiar that players can recognize and easily be invested in. XDefiant has a lot of ground to cover if it wishes to become among the heavy contenders for a mainstream live service game like its competitors, but also remain original.
Ubisoft is faced with an unfortunate ordeal but Rubin is doing the best he can with the hand he is dealt. His past with Call of Duty has caught up with him and perhaps it can help him make XDefiant an even greater game through his previous experience.
