As the 96th Academy Awards (March 10, 2024) draw near, Barbie has much to be proud of, but the Best Actress nomination for Margot Robbie will not be among them. Even though Robbie is the face of the 2023 hit, wearing every shade of pink under the sun and breaking down in tears at a crucial moment, she’s not among the nominees for the much-coveted statuette.
The Australian beauty, who made headlines for her astounding $50 million deal to star in Greta Gerwig’s fantasy comedy 2023 flick, recently shrugged off the disappointment of being overlooked for the Best Actress nomination. In a refreshing display of self-assurance, Robbie stated that there is no reason to be “sad”, mirroring that her true worth is not determined by an Oscar statuette.
Barbie Oscars Snub: Margot Robbie Breaks Her Silence
Margot Robbie has always taken on challenging roles, from her breakout performance as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad to the highly regarded Tonya Harding in I, Tonya. Regardless of any awards she may receive, her talent is in high demand as a trailblazer in the industry.
Her pivotal role in bringing Barbie to the big screen has earned her a substantial reward. Variety estimates that the star and producer of the biggest hit flick of last summer took home about $50 million in salary. Still no Oscar nominations for the titular fashion doll’s role?
Well, she is not allowing the Oscars’ snub for Barbie to break her down, though, as the film managed an astounding eight nominations this year. During a panel discussion at a special SAG screening, she stated (per Deadline).
“There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed.”
Barbie’s co-producer and star, Robbie, was reacting to the fact that she and director Greta Gerwig were not nominated for an Oscar—a situation that has caused a great deal of disappointment among Barbie fans on the internet.
“Obviously I think Greta should be nominated as a director, because what she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing, what she pulled off, it really is. But it’s been an incredible year for all the films.”
Barbie is not only a billion-dollar movie that was directed entirely by a woman but it did better than every other film as well. As Robbie noted, the response to the film has evolved into a sort of phenomenon in culture.
“I just suspect it’s bigger than us. It’s bigger than this movie, it’s bigger than our industry.”
In addition to hitting multiple records with a $1.44 billion box office haul, the movie also became the highest-grossing movie of 2023.
Barbie Star Is ‘Beyond Ecstatic’ About The Film’s Eight Oscar Nominations
Margot Robbie remains happy about her co-star’s Oscar nominations. The actress, 33, continued, saying that the film’s eight nominations at the 96th Academy Awards have left her “beyond ecstatic”.
In addition to two nominations for Best Original Song (I’m Just Ken and What Was I Made For), this list also includes Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling), and Best Supporting Actress (America Ferrera). Robbie stated:
“Everyone getting the nods that they’ve had is just incredible, and the best picture nod. We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact..”
After the nominations for this year’s Academy Awards were revealed, controversy surrounding Robbie and Gerwig’s combined Oscar snubs erupted. Ferrera, their fellow nominee, addressed the rejections and voiced her dissatisfaction with the Academy. The Gotta Kick It Up! star told Variety.
“What Margot achieved as an actress is truly unbelievable. One of the things about Margot as an actress is how easy she makes everything look. And perhaps people got fooled into thinking that the work seems easy, but Margot is a magician as an actress in front of the screen…In my book, she’s a master.”
Last summer, Barbie helped to revive the movie theater industry, partly because of the internet’s viral ‘Barbenheimer’ trend, which challenged viewers to watch both Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s three-hour historical drama, Oppenheimer. The two films made their theatrical debuts on the same weekend, breaking several records together.
