Interestingly, this marquee role fell into Robbie’s lap without her even auditioning for the part. The Wolf of Wall Street star who shared screen space with Will Smith in Suicide Squad, was chosen unanimously by James Gunn and David Ayer after they were suitably impressed with her chemistry with the Oscar winner in another film.

Margot Robbie’s Performance In Focus Earned Her The Role Of Harley Quinn

Margot Robbie’s unhinged and entertaining portrayal of Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad won her lots of appreciation from fans and critics alike. In addition, her chemistry with Will Smith in the film was also memorable. The star though, didn’t have to even break a sweat to get the role.

In an interview with MTV News, Robbie spoke of how Harley Quinn fell into her lap without the effort of an audition, owing to her previous film with Smith in 2015 titled Focus. Directors Gunn and Ayer were so convinced about her talent and her on-screen equation with the King Richard actor, that it was a no-brainer to get Robbie on board with the DC franchise.

“I actually got offered this one, I didn’t audition, which is a real step up as an actor when you can get offered things. We didn’t have to do chemistry reads or anything like that, and then I already knew (vaguely knew) Jared Leto, who’s playing the Joker.”

Despite Suicide Squad and other subsequent DC films not finding much favor at the box office and with viewers, there was never any debate that Margot Robbie’s version of Harley Quinn would be a performance to be remembered.

Margot Robbie On Lady Gaga’s Version Of Harley Quinn

While the role of Harley Quinn has been synonymous with Margot Robbie’s brilliant interpretation of the DC villain, the Australian star will now have to make way for Lady Gaga who will play the role in the 2nd installment of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker titled Joker: Folie à Deux. While this character has been incredibly close to The Birds of Prey star, Robbie expressed her excitement to MTV News on the singer-actor bringing her own unique touch to the role.

“It makes me so happy because I said from the very beginning that all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters the way…like Macbeth or Batman always gets passed from great actor to great actor. Someone gets to do their Batman, or someone gets to do their Macbeth.”
