Marvel and DC fans have been waiting for someday when finally the worlds of Superman and Iron Man may collide. Although such a crossover sounds far-fetched, it looks like another prominent superhero IP, Invincible may pull off a similar stunt. This is speculated as recently The Spectacular Spider-Man fame Josh Keaton teased his appearance in Invincible Season 2.
However, even before the potential crossover, Marvel fans did not ignore a subtle reference to the web-slinger in the latest Invincible episode. Despite being an extremely minute detail, Marvel fans took over the internet to express their excitement about the Spidey reference.
The latest Invincible episode gives a clever Spider-Man easter-egg
The Invincible has amassed a massive fandom after its animated series launched on Amazon Prime. It provided a breath of fresh air by introducing bloody and mature themes in the prevailing atmosphere of generic superhero stories. Now a potential Marvel crossover can elevate the success of the Robert Kirkman to monstrous levels.
The Marvel fans are known for having Hawkeye’s vision when it comes to spotting small easter eggs and details. It looks like they have not left Invincible as well. In the latest and the seventh episode titled “I’m Not Going Anywhere“, a specific action by Rex Splode has sparked a buzz among fans. In a specific scene, the character imitates Spider-Man’s web-throwing hand motion.
The buzz was even more elevated when Invincible’s official X handle also acknowledged the reference and tweeted- “With great power comes great energy blasts using this hand motion for no particular reason at all”. The reference in the 7th episode, soon after Josh Keaton’s announcement of featuring in one of the episodes of the series hinted to the fans that something’s cooking.
Despite being interesting, it must be noted that the reference is very subtle and still does not confirm anything about Josh Keaton’s potential appearance in the Steven Yeun series. With only one episode left, it will be interesting to see if they are planning for a mega-crossover finale.
The fans are going mad over the Spider-Man reference
The entire Spider-Man-Invincible drama started after it was reported that the friendly neighborhood superhero’s VA in The Spectacular Spider-Man series will appear in Invincible Season 2. Even trusted scooper @MyTimeToShineH reported that Josh Keaton will likely reprise his Spider-Man role in the Robert Kirkman series.
However, when asked about the matter to Keaton, he maintained silence and only clarified that he would be there in one of the episodes. Josh Keaton has added in another tweet that he did not even get the full script to read. There is “NSA level security” to the whole plan. Several fans are also skeptical about the entire crossover thing due to the issues of rights to the characters. The Spider-Man rights have been one of the most confusing things to exist in Marvel.
However, on the other hand, Amazon Prime is also making two Spider-Man series- Silk: Spider Society and Spider-Man Noir. So it will be interesting to find out if Josh Keaton is indeed recreating one of the iconic comic book crossovers between the web-crawler and Mark Grayson or if it is just a mere marketing stunt to increase the hype for the season finale.
Invincible Season 2 Episode 8 will be streamed on Amazon Prime on April 4, 2024.
