Invincible Season 2 Part 2 is picking up on its pace and subtly planting the seeds for the future Viltrumite War arc. In the latest release titled, ‘It’s Not That Simple,’ series protagonist and titular character Mark Grayson gets a glimpse into the Viltrumites’ weak spots hidden throughout the failed sci-fi books that his father, Nolan, otherwise known as Omni-Man, wrote.
This ties into the Viltrumite telling his son to read his books in Season 2, Episode 4. Now, fans of the series are finally learning why Mark was instructed to do so. Before we proceed any further, here’s a spoiler warning for Invincible Season 2, Episode 6.
Omni-Man assumed the identity of a best-selling author on Earth, known for publishing travel pieces. But travel books weren’t all that Nolan wrote.
He also penned several ‘sci-fi novels,’ as Art Rosenbaum divulges to Mark in the recent episode. However, these books aren’t fictional but the reality Omni-Man encountered during his missions across the galaxy before his arrival on Earth. They chronicle the threats to Viltrumites and, under Mark’s possession, offer a glimpse into the secrets that could help bring down the Viltrumite Empire for good.
Of these threats that the Viltrumites fear, one is the feral, animalistic alien race of Rognarrs. But who exactly are these creatures, and why are they considered a weakness of the uber-powerful, highly advanced Viltrumites?
Invincible Season 2 Episode 6: Who Are Rognarrs In Nolan Grayson’s Book?
As Art hands Mark his father’s failed sci-fi ‘novels’ in Episode 6 of Robert Kirkman‘s Invincible Season 2, we see the titular character go through two of them specifically. Here, he realizes that Omni-Man chronicled the actual threats to Viltrumites, the ‘things’ that can hurt them.
The first book he reads is titled, ‘The Man with the Invincible Gun,’ which revolves around the legendary Space Rider (who is Space Racer in reality), an alien who yields a weapon dubbed the ‘Infinity Ray.’
This equipment projects beams that can shoot through anything and is lethal to even Viltrumites.
The second book that Mark picks up is called, ‘Savage Planet, Savage Beasts.’ This book recounts Nolan’s time scouting a harsh planet as part of a mission and encountering a ravaging species of aliens who inhabit it. These creatures are called the Rognarrs. In the episode, the first thing Omni-Man recounts of the planet upon touchdown is its gravity.
He’s heard saying, “The planet was so dense, and its pull so strong, we could barely move.”
After investigating the area and finding no usable resources, Nolan and his Viltrumite partner assigned to the mission were ready to leave. But before they could, they were attacked. And this was perpetrated by none other than the bloodthirsty Rognarrs. They should’ve been an easy feat for Omni-Man to tackle, given he himself iterates, “I’ve battled creatures ten times their size.”
Then what was it about them that posed a threat to the Viltrumites?
Rognarrs And The Threat They Pose To Viltrumites
Due to the hyper-gravity on their planet, the ravening, sharp-fanged Rognarrs had evolved in their strength. Their unprecedented brute force poses a threat to Viltrumites, whom they can kill and rip to shreds almost effortlessly. It has been demonstrated that their claws can even puncture their near-impenetrable flesh. They are known to survive in the harshest climates, too.
On his encounter with the species, Nolan recounted feeling fear that this planet inhabited by Rognarrs would be his grave.
While they do not possess the intelligence of Viltrumites and can be outsmarted, their predatory, beastly disposition and evolved strength give them an edge over the former race. Therefore, where strength is considered, they outpower even the members of the Viltrum Empire. This doesn’t make them invincible by any means, but they’re one of the weaknesses that can be utilized during the Viltrumite War.
They’re certainly a force to be reckoned with.
In the episode, when Mark learns of these clues through Nolan’s books, we see him show them to Allen the Alien, who scans the material to take back to the Coalition of Planets and Thaedus. This is sowing the seeds for Invincible‘s future, and while the answer to what happens is known to the comic-book readers, it’ll be intriguing to see how it plays out in the animated series.
Omni-Man’s books are just bridging the distance between those upcoming arcs.
Invincible Season 2 Part Two has two episodes out now, available for streaming on Prime Video.
