Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man could have had a multiverse feature that could have been a success like GTA Online, with recent leaks and full trailers being scattered all across social media, fans are now demanding for the project to be resurrected. It was an open secret that Insomniac was working on a multiplayer title, and fans have long speculated it was Marvel-related and it was a Spider-Man multiplayer until its cancellation for reasons unknown.

After the ransomware attack on Insomniac, terabytes of data have been leaked and sold as well as sensitive information like personnel details, unfinished gameplay footage, and even plans in the coming years. The developers were seriously hurt, an insult to injury to have footage of their canceled project leak with positive feedback wishing it would see the light of day, but the fate of Spider-Man: The Great Web seems to be definitive.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: The Great Web Could Have Been GTA Online With Web-Slingers

GTA Online is still going strong, and Insomniac could have integrated some elements for a Spider-Man multiverse game with co-op.

Ever since the rise in popularity of the concept of the Multiverse, almost every franchise has taken the opportunity to do it themselves. The animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse even won Best Animated Feature tackles the Multiverse, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe later made that their main focus and did everything in their power to flesh it out. It could have been the bridge to unite every Marvel project into one, and it would have benefitted greatly with their most popular hero.

The leaked concept video even laid out a well-polished plan that involves in-game features and content like raids, villain story arcs, multiplayer activities, and more. It is baffling to see a project with great potential be scrapped and the reasons behind it may upset fans even more.

The surge of live-service games has taken the gaming industry by storm, while there are some incredible hits like Fortnite, Apex Legends, and even PlayStation’s Helldivers 2 which has a strong community and a committed studio, there are a lot of disappointing failures like Marvel’s Avengers. Perhaps Sony refuses to go down the path of a superhero live-service game because it is too costly to sustain, and reallocated its budget towards their traditional single-player projects like Marvel’s Wolverine.

Spider-Man: The Great Web Could Have Been Great, But The Timing Wasn’t

Sony has been slowly making its way towards a more varied portfolio of games, developing live-service titles with newer developers and incorporating them into existing franchises like The Last of Us, and just like The Great Web, it was canceled.

PlayStation could have made a success out of it yet didn’t push forward, another potential reason could be Disney themselves and it could be the same reason why the Mandalorian game at Respawn was scrapped.

Perhaps there is a universe somewhere in the vast multiverse where these canceled projects made their way to consumers’ hands, praised and well-received without Sony fearing the chance of failure and with tighter security all around.
