McConaughey has dated a number of high-profile women in the film industry, but unlike many other Hollywood actors, you’ll never see him embroiled in any controversies involving women or hear about him misbehaving or being inappropriate. And he wasn’t just respectful toward the women he was romantically linked with, because The Gentleman star has indeed been a gentleman in all aspects of the word, values which seem to have been passed down to him by his father.

Matthew McConaughey Shares His Father’s Words of Wisdom

In a new episode of SiriusXM’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, Matthew McConaughey opened up about some of the soundest advice he’s ever received when his father. James Donald McConaughey made him understand the importance of active consent during s*x.

The Wolf of Wall Street star recalled the way his dad had elucidated upon the gravity of consent during s*xual encounters, pointing out how being on the same page as the other person was of the utmost value. McConaughey’s father had also made it crystal clear that if and when he got intimate with a woman and sensed any nervousness or tension, he should never let the situation escalate and stop things then and there.

“I remember my dad talking to me, and I shared this with my son, but he said a very, very cool thing. He goes, ‘You’re gonna come to a time when you’re gonna have some intimacy with a woman, and if you stop, sometimes after you stop, she may go, ‘Okay, well now let’s go.’ And he goes, ‘Don’t go further. Say, ‘Hey, nuh-uh, if we get back together and it all just flows and goes further, great. But that’s all for now.'”

“If both people are just flowing, if it’s all green lights, you go as far as it’s comfortable,” the Fool’s Gold star told host Kelly Ripa, recapitulating his father’s words. “But if you feel someone, you know, tense up, it’s like, ‘Hey, we don’t have to, we got time.'”

If McConaughey’s dad in the ’90s could be so mindful and insightful about the concept of consent, then it should certainly be a piece of cake for people to instill such values in today’s time.

Even though the True Detective star only dated Bullock for a brief period, the latter still had nothing but love and respect for McConaughey. “No matter where he is in his life or where I am in mine — he could be married — I know we would stay close,” the Miss Congeniality actress told Cosmopolitan. That’s how you know you’re a true gentleman when your ex has such high regard for you even after breaking up.

Presently, however, the Interstellar star is a family man with three kids and a beautiful wife, Camila Alves, to who he’s been married for over a decade now.
