Metro Exodus, the popular entry in the first-person shooter horror Metro franchise, has been praised for its engaging and cinematic plot that players have found to be very fun and immersive. The game was released in 2019 and has garnered a large community that has been looking for a sequel.
Players were a little disappointed when Vertigo Games announced Metro Awakening VR at the PlayStation State of Play last month, as they were expecting a sequel to Metro Exodus, but 4A Games has now confirmed that a sequel to the game is in the works, but it’s not coming out any time soon.
A Metro Exodus Sequel Is Confirmed, but Don’t Expect It Soon
Metro Exodus recently celebrated its fifth anniversary, and 4A Games took to X with a franchise timeline to reveal that it has started working on the sequel. The announcement comes after Metro Awakening VR was announced, which is both a prequel and spin-off and not a mainline game in the series. 4A Games stated:
Metro will return in VR with Metro Awakening from @vertigogames in 2024 – and the next mainline Metro from @4AGames… When it’s ready. Thank you for coming on the journey so far with us.
Metro Exodus, the third main installment in the series, is set one year after the events of Last Light and takes players across Russia after a nuclear fallout with mutant enemies lurking in the shadows. The game has been praised by fans and critics alike, and developer 4A Games also announced that Metro Exodus has sold over 10 million copies as of now.
However, 4A Games said that the game will only come “when it’s ready,” meaning that the developer would take a good amount of time to create the game so that it exceeds players’ expectations and also surpasses the standards that Metro Exodus has set.
What Is the Earliest Possible Release Date for the Metro Exodus Sequel?
Metro games are based on novels by Dmitry Glukhovsky, and the first game in the now-popular series, Metro 2033, was released back in 2010. Last Light was released in 2013, and since there has been a remaster of both Metro 2033 and Last Light called Metro Redux, an Enhanced Edition of Metro Exodus was also launched in 2021, and the SDK mod support software was released in 2023.
The developer did not reveal any details on the sequel’s release or if the original protagonist, Artyom, would be coming back. For those unaware, Metro Awakening VR follows a new protagonist called Serdar, and the game is set before the events of Metro 2033.
Considering the release timeline of the main Metro games, it will take some time before the game is set to release, and the earliest players can expect its launch is in late 2025 or early 2026, and that is pure speculation as of yet.
There were rumors last year that a Metro Exodus sequel was fully playable, but it cannot be said if it was for Metro Awakening VR or the now-confirmed sequel. Are you excited about the Metro Exodus sequel? Let us know in the comment section below.
