Michael B. Jordan’s Fruitvale Station chronicled the last day that led up to the murder of Oscar Grant III in 2009 by BART officers. The actor had a big responsibility in getting things right and authentically playing a person who existed and has a family who suffered because of the tragedy. Jordan talked about the pressure of doing the film on The Steam Room Podcast.

The actor claimed that there were many things about the film that were new for him. He had never been a lead in a film before, and it was important to him to get the blessings of Grant’s family. He strived hard to portray the real essence of Grant as a person and director Ryan Coogler’s script gave him ample opportunities to do that. He said,

“I never had to carry a film. And you know, as actors, there’s kind of a moment in your career where you’re wondering, can you open a film, can you lead a movie? So there’s a lot of that doubt and questions and kind of anxiety that I was floating around in my head. And then on top of that, to your point, it’s like, he’s a real person.

He has a daughter, and a mother, and friends and family, that knew him so well. So getting their blessing, and their sign off and their approval over the performance over the work was the biggest kind of, this emotional anxiety, obstacle I had at that time. But there is a little pressure there, you know to kind of get it right.

And wanting the essence of who Oscar Grant was. And wanted that to come through the character and through the movie. And a film, beautifully written and directed by Ryan Coogler, really gave me the space and opportunity to become that, to become him as much as I could.”

The film was universally acclaimed and became Jordan’s breakthrough role. He started getting noticed in Hollywood and appeared in high-profile projects after Fruitvale Station. Jordan and Coogler are reuniting for a new film set to shoot this April.
