Jenna Ortega is rising to fame with several astounding roles under her sleeves, but the young actor has stepped into something bolder in Miller’s Girl. Scribed and directed by Jade Bartlett, the sensual black comedy is not something for fans to digest with ease.
The Rated-R movie features a remarkable amount of s*x scenes between the primary characters— Jenna Ortega’s Cairo Sweet, and Martin Freeman’s Jonathan Miller. Fans find the s*x scenes between the stars that have a 31-year age gap, horrible to the core.
Jenna Ortega’s S*x Scene With Martin Freeman Was Upsetting For Many Fans
Jenna Ortega, who has made her prominence after appearing in Netflix’s Wednesday, made a bold move by agreeing to the raunchy script of Jade Bartlett’s black comedy Miller’s Girl. Certainly, both Martin Freeman, 52, and Ortega, 21, were aware of what was at stake but the director was very enlightened with the idea of featuring the duo that, according to her, has a splendid chemistry.
“I think it’s about finding people who have the right sort of sensitivities to each other or that are, I don’t know, they get along. Honestly, I don’t know. But Martin and Jenna both understood these characters so well, and without a lot of explanation from me. So when we got into shooting, they knew all of the lines. It’s obviously very, very dialogue heavy. So they came in like they were doing a play,” Bartlett told Screen Rant.
Filming is one thing, but everything about a film is justified by the reception of it. And fans are not keen on reciprocating the narrative despite the director’s insistence on it as she labeled the narrative as relatable. The reactions from the fans across social platforms collectively labeled the movie as ‘gross,’ primarily because of the attempted sensual representation with the huge age gap that went the other way.
Jade Bartlett Long Expected A Divisive Reaction From Fans
While writing the movie, Bartlett was particularly keen on experimenting with the source of her inspiration for the movie. The essence of the narrative shaping up, however, required intense dramatic conflict, but what else is there beyond death? Unprecedented and conflicting s*x, of course. After the drop of the trailer, Bartlett was not very surprised to see the reaction from the fans. “I’d rather people be talking about it than people thinking it’s boring,” she told Screen Rant. “As a writer, boring is death,” she added.
“So whether you like it or don’t like it, if you’re talking about it’s done its job. And I think when people, the trailer looks a way, I get it. I get the knee-jerk reaction. My hope is that people go in and see that it’s more nuanced than that. I hope that people go in and can have grace for characters who are not the binary. The perfect victim is boring. It’s boring to write. It’s boring to be. I think it is dangerous to keep writing women as the perfect victim because it doesn’t allow us any agency.”
For the director, the s*x scenes that terrified the fans in intense horror were actually the core of the narrative. It would not move a single inch without the s*x-infested conflict between the characters. Still, fans believe that no amount of justification could adhere to the disturbing sensual scenes.
