The highly anticipated Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree will be released very soon, and the community has just got some important information regarding its story focus.
In a recent IGN interview, Hidetaka Miyazaki, the visionary behind the game, offered insights into George R. R. Martin’s ongoing impact on the expansion’s storyline, following his involvement in the base game.
Martin’s Mythos Shaped the Elden Ring DLC
In the interview, Miyazaki addressed Martin’s role in the planning of Shadow of the Erdtree, emphasizing that the integration of Martin’s narrative is consistent with the base game:
The way George Martin’s story has been incorporated is the same as it was with the base game with Elden Ring. And to avoid misunderstanding there, we just want to point out that he hasn’t written anything exclusively and new for the sake of this DLC.
Miyazaki asserts that Martin’s work for the base game took an active part in shaping the DLC. The crux of this involvement lies in the utilization of Martin’s mythos, from which a specific segment was initially drawn to shape Elden Ring‘s narrative and world.
The Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, according to Miyazaki, delves into another segment of this original mythos.
Miyazaki also mentioned that the two have been in touch via e-mail since the game’s release but they haven’t been able to meet in person yet:
Unfortunately, he’s just been so busy that we haven’t had that chance yet. But I’ll keep looking for an opportunity.
While this doesn’t say much about what part of Martin’s work influenced the DLC, Miyazaki still gave us some critical information about the expansion later in the interview.
New DLC Will Follow Miquella into the Land of Shadow
Turning attention to the specifics of the DLC, Miyazaki shared intriguing details about the setting and themes of Shadow of the Erdtree. The expansion occurs in an entirely new land, separate from the familiar Lands Between, shrouded in the ominous presence of the Erdtree’s shadow.
Although still occupying the same universe, the land is physically disconnected, requiring players to traverse through a cocoon in Mohg’s boss arena after defeating him.
Miyazaki elaborated on the central figures shaping the narrative—Queen Marika, and Miquella.
As players embark on this new journey, they will trace the footsteps of Miquella, who has gone to the Land of Shadow. The mystery surrounding Queen Marika also plays a pivotal role, as players will unravel her actions in the new land and the events that led Miquella to follow her there.
Although George R. R. Martin didn’t pen new content for the DLC, his mythos for the base game intertwines with Miyazaki’s creativity, guaranteeing a captivating continuation of Elden Ring‘s rich narrative.
