The 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards marked the reunion of several shows including including the beloved ABC comedy-drama Modern Family. The show ran for 11 seasons from 2009 to 2020, exploring the complexities of family dynamics, relationships, parenthood, and societal issues within diverse suburban Los Angeles families who are connected through their Jay Pritchett.
Along with receiving praise for its diverse cast, and humor, Modern Family has also won multiple accolades throughout its successful run, including four SAG Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. And the cast of the show took the stage at the 2024 Screen Guild Awards, they took this opportunity to spark a conversation about a reboot of the beloved comedy series.
Modern Family Cast is Looking Forward to a Reboot
In a heartwarming reunion at the 30th Annual SAG Awards, the iconic cast of the comedy-drama Modern Family took the honor to present the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series to Jeremy Allen Whilte’s The Bear.
As Ed O’Neill, Julie Bowen, Sofia Vergara, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, and Ty Burrell graced the stage, they reminisced about their time on the hit comedy series. Ty Burrell started the conversation, saying, “This really brings back memories. You guys ever miss it?”
Bowen swiftly responded with a resounding “Oh, Hell yeah,” before adding how great time they had working on the show. The playful banter among the cast members continued with Sofia Vergara seizing the opportunity to highlight her new Netflix drama Griselda’s success and Ed O’Neill stating what he misses the most about being part of a hit TV series, “The Money,” he quoted.
And Jesse Tyler Ferguson also took his chances as he humorously expressed his willingness to return to the show. Broaching the topic of a potential Modern Family reboot, he said, “Is it too early to talk about a reboot?” before adding, “They made me park a mile away from here.”
Although there have been conversations surrounding a potential reboot and spin-off, no concrete progress has been made since the show ended in 2020 after 11 successful seasons and 250 episodes. The show’s creator has also expressed satisfaction with the legacy of Modern Family, suggesting that there might be no further development regarding a spin-off or reboot.
The Modern Family Cast And Creator on a Potential Reboot
Since the show ended in 2020, the cast and the creator of the show have addressed a potential reboot of the series on multiple occasions. In a conversation with Entertainment Tonight, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who played Mitchell Pritchett in the show, talked about a potential spin-off.
“The script’s out there, and it’s very good—So, you know, who knows? If someone wants to produce it, maybe,” he said. However, the creator of the series, Steven Levitan, has expressed immense gratitude for the experience he has had on the show.
However, he also indicated that he is content with the show as it is and does not feel the need to consider rebooting it. “It exceeded all my wildest expectations. And I liked that it was of its time. We captured that moment in time, and I’m pretty happy with just that,” Levitan told Variety in a conversation.
Sofia Vergara also addressed the reboot discussions in an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. When asked if she ever thinks, “Oh, maybe, it’s time for a reboot?” the actress said, “No, it’s only been four years.”
She also stated that they do need a little more time to think about it as it could be too early for a reboot. However, the cast’s reunion at the 30th Annual SAG Awards has once again reignited the conversations for a reboot.
