Gamescom 2023 is the biggest gaming event of the year, and with it comes a slew of updates, new announcements, trailers and more. During Opening Night Live a ton of games have been shown off, and to no-one’s surprise, that includes the worst kept secret of the gaming year in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Modern Warfare 3 Represents a Franchise First Consecutive Releases

Modern Warfare 3

Everyone has grown accustomed to the annual releases of the Call of Duty franchise, but the major difference this year is that rather than the franchise change setting and characters as it normally would, the handover of developers hasn’t been followed by a difference in setting. Sledgehammer Games are taking over development duties of the Modern Warfare duties from Infinity Ward, and in a franchise first, we’;ll be getting another Modern Warfare entry only a year on from the previous one.

Many fans have been less than enthused with this development, calling it a ‘cash grab’, ‘DLC turned full game isn’t a full game’ and much more besides. However, it seems Sledgehammer games may have been developing this for a while, with not only the culmination of the much-loved campaign sorted, with the infamous Makarov making his return, but also a new franchise mechanic called ‘Open-Combat Missions’, where players are able to choose their approach to missions, be it stealth, kill-streaks or all out mayhem, the choice is now in the player’s hands, and this includes campaign missions as well!

Modern Warfare 3 Opening Level

The extended gameplay shown was of the game’s opening level, with Taskforce 141 infiltrating a prison and breaking out a certain character, although whilst there are plenty of guesses, the trailer cuts just as the TaskForce begin to breach. so we’ll be waiting a little while to find out the specifics.

However, the gameplay shown up till that point looked crisp, extraordinarily pretty and very sharp for a FPS, which has become par for the course for the Call of Duty franchise.

With the promise of the ‘Open-Combat Missions’, the culmination of a fan-favourite campaign, the long-standing multiplayer and potentially even open world zombies for the first time, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has the hallmarks of potentially being the best in the series, even with a large section of fans lambasting the decision.

Releasing in a few short months we don’t have long until we can find out whether a consecutive release was the right idea or nothing but a cash grab, but what do you think? Let us know in the comments!
