“So this guy’s working in the produce department at the grocery store and a lady walks up and she says ‘Excuse me, where’s the broccoli, I can’t find the broccoli.’ He said ‘Oh I’m really sorry ma’am we ran out of broccoli, will have some tomorrow morning.’ And he goes back to his work and he’s stacking the oranges and he hears behind him ‘mister,’ and he turns around and it’s the same way she says ‘where’s the broccoli?’ I will have some tomorrow, he says and goes back to work. This woman walks right up to his face and she says ‘How come I can’t find any broccoli?’ He says ‘How do you spell a cat.’ She replies C A T. He says how do you spell F*ck in broccoli? She says there is no f*ck in broccoli. So that’s what I’m trying to tell you, lady.”

Ford’s broccoli joke received a standing ovation from the audience present at the David Letterman’s show.

Hamill said (via YouTube):

“At the screening, when that happened, Harrison turned to me and said, ‘Hey, kid, you didn’t f**king tell me that.’ I apologize for the f-bomb, I only use it for historical accuracy! I was so thrilled because I don’t like having the burden of that. I talk in my sleep, I’m clearly dangerous.”

Although the incident had its humorous side, Hamill grappled with the responsibility of maintaining the secret. Concerned about inadvertently spilling the beans, he particularly worried about his tendency to chatter in his sleep. Post their stints in the Star Wars series, Hamill and Ford pursued divergent trajectories in the world of film.
