Nintendo, as a gaming company, has many feathers in its cap. Games like Pokémon and Super Mario and consoles such as the SNES and Switch are now part of gaming history forevermore. With even more games on the horizon, Nintendo shows no signs of taking its foot off the gas.

However, the company has also had its fair share of blunders. Aside from the bad press of their strict copyright claims, one of the company’s consoles didn’t perform as well as they had hoped: the Wii U. A recent rumor has suggested that the name for the upcoming Switch is also going to be just as confusing, possibly reigniting the same issue for Nintendo.

It’s revealed in the comments that the title is not official and is simply for market research. However, the fact that it sounds possible for Nintendo to release a console with such a name is pretty telling about the company. The same issue happened when they first showcased the Wii U at E3.

The Wii U was intended to work in tandem with the console and the new, bulky controller. However, the presentation of the system was confusing, leading some to believe it was a handheld and others to not even understand the point of the screen on the controller. Some even thought the new controller was just an accessory rather than an integral part of the console.

The name was also a bit vague. Console titles like the PlayStation 4 or Xbox Series S or X showcase the console as being the next step in the generation. The fact that one would need to watch the presentation to understand the reason behind the name of the console is not the best way to market a new flagship product.

Nintendo’s Wii U was a Major Flop for the Company

The Wii U failure is a lesson for not just Nintendo, but all console manufacturers.
The Wii U failure is a lesson for not just Nintendo, but all console manufacturers.

The console was deemed a critical and commercial failure, with gamers turning to PlayStation and Xbox for their console gaming needs. Aside from the confusing name, the console did not launch with any standout games that would make people want to purchase the product.

Several technical issues also plagued the system, with the gamepad not being powerful enough to run games on the screen. It could only mirror games via the console while connected to the same network. The main system could also only pair with a single gamepad at a time, so co-op play was unavailable.

People were also looking for a console that could rival PlayStation and Xbox in terms of power and game lineup. The Wii U fell short on a number of these aspects, leading to production ending in 2017 and online support shutting down in 2023.
