To say that Suzume is one of the best anime movies to have ever been created wouldn’t be a lie considering the tremendous ratings the film has earned from almost all platforms. Encircling the life of a young teenager of the same name who sets out to save Japan through her ability to see supernatural forces, the 2022 masterpiece was a critically commended blockbuster.

Yet, despite being such a beloved option for most fans, the adventure-drama movie was still turned down when it sought acknowledgment from the Academy, wounding up with nothing more than zero nominations. And to rub salt in the wound, Suzume‘s recently winning the award for Best Anime Film has further proved to fans that Margot Robbie wasn’t the only one snubbed at the Oscars 2024.

The recently held 8th Crunchyroll Anime Awards saw a lot of shows and movies winning big, and a lot of them lagging behind. Among all of these, one film in particular was massively appreciated by both the voters as well as Crunchyroll’s panel of international judges: Suzume.

Released in 2022, the adventure anime movie was tremendously welcomed by worldwide critics and audiences, and its 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes justifies just how good of a film it was. Because of this, it even bagged the Best Anime Film accolade at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2024.

What makes its win even more special is the fact that it was nominated among other fan favorites including Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard KingBLUE GIANT, Kaguya-sama: Love Is War -The First Kiss That Never Ends-, PSYCHO-PASS: Providence, and THE FIRST SLAM DUNK.

However, despite such immaculate reviews and Suzume‘s winning big at one of the most renowned anime awards ceremonies, the Academy refused to acknowledge Makoto Shinkai’s movie while deciding the nominees for the 2024 Oscars.

In this year’s list of movies selected for the Animated Feature Film award, the nominees include The Boy and the HeronElementalNimona, Robot Dreams, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. And yet, it does not include a masterpiece like Suzume.

While fans were already devastated about the critically acclaimed anime film not making its way into the Oscar nominations, the adventure drama’s Best Anime Film win has only further confirmed to them that Margot Robbie wasn’t the only one to be snubbed by the Academy at the Oscars 2024.

To put it in a nutshell, Suzume was more than just deserving of at least getting nominated for an Oscar at the soon-to-be-held Academy Awards 2024, and the film winning the Best Anime Film award only stands as further proof of this claim.

Meanwhile, you can watch Suzume on the Crunchyroll Amazon Channel.
