Unfortunately, not everyone in the industry feels that way about the actress. Carol Baum thinks that the Euphoria star is not worth the hype she has been generating of late. Sweeney, who is known for speaking her mind, clapped back, and the drama has only intensified since then.
Carol Baum is not a fan of Sydney Sweeney
Carol Baum is a very well-respected producer and executive in Hollywood. With projects such as Read Ringers and Buffy the Vampire Slayer to her credit, she is a force to be reckoned with.
While she generally lets her work speak for herself, Baum did not hold herself back last week. As reported by the Daily Mail, she spoke to Janet Maslin, a film critic for the New York Times, during a discussion panel in Pleasantville. She directed some disparaging comments at Sydney Sweeney, who has become Hollywood’s newest sweetheart.
“There’s an actress who everybody loves now: Sydney Sweeney. I don’t get Sydney Sweeney. I was watching on the plane Sydney Sweeney’s movie [‘Anyone but You’] because I wanted to watch it. I wanted to know who she is and why everybody’s talking about her. I watched this unwatchable movie — sorry to people who love this … romantic comedy where they hate each other,” she said.
The producer also teaches at the University of Southern California. She went on to reveal that she spoke about it during her class as well.
Baum’s comments raised a lot of eyebrows since she directly targeted a young actress who has just begun to find her footing in the industry. According to TMZ, however, the Hollywood executive has already expressed regrets over her original statements.
Sydney Sweeney hit back and fans are siding with her
Sweeney is enjoying the upswing that her career is currently on, with Immaculate performing well. However, she came under fire from Baum without provocation. As reported by Variety, the actress issued a statement in response to Baum’s comments.
“How sad that a woman in the position to share her expertise and experience chooses instead to attack another woman. If that’s what she’s learned in her decades in the industry and feels is appropriate to teach to her students, that’s shameful. To unjustly disparage a fellow female producer speaks volumes about Ms. Baum’s character,” read the statement.
With Sweeney’s response coming to light, fans have taken to social media to share their two-pence on the issue. The common sentiment was that even in this day and age, women still bring each other down instead of lifting each other up.
