Bill Skarsgård‘s The Crow is a modern-day reboot of Brandon Lee‘s 1994 cult film of the same name. The original was intended as a gothic superhero film and received positive reviews upon release. The reboot by Rupert Sanders changed a few things from the original, drawing obvious comparisons to Lee’s film.

According to DiscussingFilm, the film opened to a poor Rotten Tomatoes score of just 6%. The current score on the site has improved to 22% from 41 reviews. The rotten rating follows Skarsgård’s earlier film Boy Kills World, which received a Tomatometer rating of 59%. Both films had unique concepts but failed to impress the audiences.

The two back-to-back flops have affected the Barbarian actor’s credibility with the audience. The fan reaction to the poor reviews for the film mentioned Skarsgård’s recent inability to produce critical and commercial success. One fan mentioned that Nosferatu, the upcoming film by Robert Eggers, could be his last chance to prove himself at the box office. Some of the fan reactions read:

Interestingly, Nosferatu has already hyped up audiences with its talented star cast. Besides Skarsgård, the film stars Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe. The film is a remake of the 1922 film of the same name, which was based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Alison Willmore of Vulture shared that the film tried to establish a “burnout-detention boyfriend/rebellious-cheerleader girlfriend” dynamic in the film. THR‘s David Rooney shared that The Crow is a “sluggish, overly self-serious gloomfest”. David Fear of Rolling Stone criticized the movie’s intention to serve as a franchise starter.

Bill Bria of DiscussingFilm, however, gave a positive review sharing that the film was not dull or forgettable due to some of its bright spots. FandomWire‘s Ricky Valero also had a positive outlook sharing that the film is an “imperfect, perfect love story with the sweet taste of revenge.”

Nosferatu is scheduled to be released in the U.S. theaters on December 25, 2024.
