Tom Holland made a name for himself for his portrayal of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making his debut in Captain America: Civil War in 2016. His rendition of Spider-Man and Peter Parker resonated well with fans, meeting their expectations for a character that stayed true to the essence of the comics. Interestingly enough, not even Holland can save Sony’s Spider-Man cinematic Universe after the latter got an unfortunate record.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has undergone changes since Tom Holland’s initial involvement, and a considerable number of MCU fans feel that the franchise has lost its initial charm. Criticism often revolve around the perception that Marvel relies on the same tired tropes and formulas that no longer resonate as effectively with audiences.

Sony’s Spider-Man Cinematic Universe Has Set An Unfortunate Record Recently

Dakota Johnson’s upcoming Madame Web project maintained a modest social media presence in its promotions. As one of Sony’s multiversal Marvel films set to introduce new characters, anticipation among audiences for the project was high. However, the anticipation did not lead to good ratings or reviews at all.

Johnson took on the role of Madame Web, while Sydney Sweeney portrayed Julia Carpenter. The cast also featured Isabela Merced, Emma Roberts, Celeste O’Connor, Adam Scott, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, and Zosia Mamet. SJ Clarkson, known for her work on Succession, will be directing the film.

Madame Web released today and it currently stands at 23% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is abysmal, to say the least. As pointed out by Spider-Man News on Twitter, Sony’s Spider-Man Cinematic Universe has only seen massive duds over the years. Venom got 30% on Rotten Tomatoes while Venom: Let There Be Carnage got 57% and on the other hand, and Morbius got 15% which is currently the lowest-rated movie in the franchise.

Therefore, it is more than evident that not even Tom Holland could save Sony’s Spider-Man cinematic Universe from the current plight it is in and fans have now accepted this fact. It is to be noted that no other live-action superhero universe has this honor, or dishonor in this instance.

After the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, various shows and films have explored the aftermath, referencing Peter Parker’s actions. However, fans continue to be curious about the potential for a Spider-Man 4.

While speaking in an interview with Collider, Tom Holland discussed the potential for a Spider-Man 4, emphasizing that he won’t commit to another film in the series unless it is meaningful for the character.

Holland expressed a very serious stance on the matter, highlighting the importance of ensuring the continuation of the Spider-Man storyline is done thoughtfully and purposefully.

All I can say is that we have been actively engaging in conversations about what it could potentially look like for a fourth rendition of my character. Whether or not we can find a way to do justice to the character is another thing. I feel very protective over Spider-Man.

He also added:

I feel very, very lucky that we were able to work on a franchise that got better with each movie, that got more successful with each movie, which I think is really rare, and I want to protect his legacy. So, I won’t make another one for the sake of making another one. It will have to be worth the while of the character.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has an extensive lineup of movies and TV shows planned for the coming years, offering a diverse range of content. However, there is uncertainty surrounding whether Tom Holland will continue to be a part of these projects.
